Picked up my new D-90 yesterday and figured I'd try a high ISO shot. This was taken in my home office at night with a desk lamp 100 watt halogen. The lamp is on my PC desk and the goose neck facing down so as not too be interfering with my monitor. Image Meta data is:
Hand Held
AUTO white Balence
RAW
ISO-3200
Matrix meter
No Flash
Aperature preferred mode
Nikkor AF 50mm f /1.8 D lense .......Exposure at 1/80 sec. & f2.0
Looks pretty good to me as far as noise is concerned. Colors look good , Could be a little sharper. Just cropped in Lightroom.
just figured I'd share this high ISO Image with you.

Edmund - that's a great shot! I'm interested in purchasing the D90, as well. But what I'd really like to know is how does one go about applying for a card to get access into your extensive PS library? There are quite a few books I'd like to check out for a few weeks! ;)

Great idea..looks good.
I have been meaning to test my camera.
I want to try a high ISO vs a low ISO with the brightness bumped up in PS and see how they compare..all in low light.
Of course I have been plannig to try this for a while.:p

Kim, The Library is open from 0900 hrs to 1600 hrs EST here in NY. My wife call's me a book-a-holic and has suggested a 12 step program for me to go to. Most of the books purchased from Borders/amazon on line at 30-50% discounts and free shipping. I just can not turn down a good book. The picture only shows the first two of five shelves. I'm a avid reader and have many hundreds more on various topis.

Gary, I too want to do some sort of controlled test when I get the spare time. It was late last night when I posted that image.

Eddie,
Image looks great! My new XSi camera ONLY goes up to 1600. Time for an upgrade? NOT!!
Yeah, 3200 would be nice, but 1600 is good enuff.

Looks fine at 3200 - why not give it a try at 6400. I tried ISO 6400 in the D300 (which I think has the same sensor) and it wasn't too bad at all and a touch of noise reduction made it quite useable. I might skip a generation as there are times I could really use the 25600 you get on the D3 and D700 :)

Thanks for the demo, Eddie... how did the camera know it was hand held? :p
Byron, The D-90 has a mic. in it and it could tell from my heavy breathing that it was hand held.
Tony, ISO-6400 will be next.

I guess that's as good an explanation as any! :p
Do you have a sense for the D90's body in reference to the D80? I understand that it uses the same accessory battery grip, so wonder just how closely they compare.

Byron, I use the same MB-D80 battery grip and I believe they are basically the same body. I also read in some of the reviews that essentially both bodies are in fact the same. The weights according to the spec sheet D-90=1lb 6oz./620g & D-80 =1lb 5oz./585g. Feels the same to me. The reason I upgraded was for the low noise levels at higher ISO's and also I got a fair price for my D-80 by selling it on the Nikonians site for $500. That way I kept my outlay down at this point rather then waiting another 2 years and getting basically nothing for the D-80. But me being a photo-holic I can rationalize anything.

Eddie,
On the D90, is the Menu pretty much the same as the D80? Also, does your new camera have the Noise Reduction for longer exposures and also the High ISO's like the D80?
One more thing, I had heard that Nikon was installing a Coffee Maker in the Next version. So does your new D90 make both Regular and Espresso? :D  It does come in handy when were shooting something really important and running around really hard....

Looks pretty good but it's been downsized so much that it's really hard to evaluate the noise.

Great picture Eddie.
I've gotten braver with the ISO boosting. Mine only goes to 1600 (canon xti).
Future SIL has the Sony A700. The boosted ISo works well in that camera. It shows much noise in the A100 though.

Mark, yes to both questions(Noise reduction). Also If I put the focus beeper on and rub the camera then focus when it beeps A "Genie" pops out of nowhere and grants me three wishes. I don't know where this is going but I'm going on 71, married for 49 years so I asked my wife for advice.:eek::D

A Genie with 3 wishes, and you just got yourself a New Camera??? Hmmm, we could go
anywhere with these
First Rule, stop asking the Wife about the wishes. You should be asking her if she wants to go on a long Cruise (Ask Genie about a Cruise) and Hey, if you're going on a Cruise can I get this really Sharp/Fast Lens...
(Ask Genie, about a Hot Fashion Model that wants you to shoot her for her next AD on this Cruise Ship)
If she says a big fat N O then just show here this Web Site and see what she says. Go Here ONLY if she is giving you a Hard Time About The Lens. No need to go this far if you don't intend to make it worth your while, this Tour Company is only for Big CEO's that get at least 2 Mill a year in just Bonuses..... (Its way out of my League even with a Genie)
