italicizing part of text when adding text to slides

I sometimes add text to slides and occasionally next to italicize one or two words. I cannot find a way to do so. It seems to be "all or none". Can anyone help me out?

Try putting the italicised text on a separate layer.

Hello and Welcome!

You can select the word(s) in a block, then click on the Italic icon on the option bar. This will put in Italic only this word, not the rest of the words.

Also, at least with PSE3, you can change the text attribute on the fly, as you type. Start with type something regular, then click on bold, the next words will be bold and the first ones will remain as they were before.
