This is a photo of an Alaskan Musk ox. The stringy looking areas are known as quivet. A very soft underwool that is shedded. The material is used for scarfs, sweaters, etc. It is very expensive and softer than most any animal fibers.

Bill, unique looking animal. Was this taken in the wild? Good photo and interesting information on him.

Bill - when I saw the title I was wondering if it was going to be a photo of a candidate for VP. :p
Very nice job!

Hi Suzanne and no, this was taken at the zoo in Anchorage last summer. You have to go a lot farther North to see one in the wild. This is probably the only Alaskan animal that I haven't in the wild. My wife and I had the opportunity to see a lynx on a road near my son's house in Anchorage. Only the second one I had seen and I lived there 0ver 55 years and spent a lot of time in the wild.

Bill: Guess we were lucky two weeks ago to see a lynx on the Dalton Highway. This was our first trip to Alaska - thought the State fantastic, especially with the autumn leaves. Jean

We drove to Alaska in our motorhome in MARCH of 2003 - ("God protects the stupid!!!"). We worked in Skagway for six months and had to be there by April 1. Along the way, we saw a Lynx also. Being from the Midwest, we thought it was a Bobcat (yes, ignorant again). But someone at a restaurant told us it was probably a Lynx. Beautiful animal. Didn't now how lucky we were to see a Lynx until after we talked to so many people about how elusive they were. Not a good picture because I took the frame off of a video. Sorry, if I hi-jacked your thread.

Nancy, they are very BIG! Sitting as he was his head would probably come up to my waist. And he just sat there like he was posing for my camera. He never moved!
