These two photos were made into BWs using a Script in Paint Shop Pro X2. Scripts are the equivalent of Actions in PSE.
Why do I use PSP X2 because I can't afford the £600 + price of C2.
PSP has paths, vectors and other goodies I've yet to get to grips with, bought it from QVC UK for £40, got to be money well spent.

What sort of results do you get when you use Elements?
Why not post the originals and let folks have a go at making a B&W from them?
Or is this just a dig at Elements v PSP. :) I confess that Elements updates seem to be very minor in my opinion and its about time some significant changes were introduced. It doesn't seem to have progressed much from V3.

These are very impressive black and white conversions. I used Paint Shop Pro for awhile when I was working on a PC. It seemed as if it had more to offer than Photoshop Elements at the time. That was years ago though. I wouldn't mind giving it another try, but I'm on the Mac now, and I haven't installed VMWare Fusion yet, so I guess I'll have to wait on that.

Colin,
I'm not knocking Elements but as a fellow Brit you must agree that Adobe treats us differently from American users.
I get very good results as do others using Elements, I was just trying to show that there are other programs to try.

Not sure what you mean by that, Kev, the Programs the same wherever you are although there are some peripheral functions that are US only.

Excellent Kev-
I also have PSP X and it does have a lot great different features in it. I wish it would come out for MAC also. I especially like the eye repair feature which has a bunch of animal eyes to choose from, but I haven't been using PSP that much lately since I have been spending much more time on the MAC :)

It just seemed to me as if Paint Shop Pro was always pushing the envelope trying to be better than Elements. Whereas Elements seemed to be "holding back" so it wasn't as good a Photoshop to give people an incentive to buy the more expensive program. Paint Shop Pro didn't have a big brother to hold back for. Paint Shop Pro was saying, "Look how powerful I am." while Elements was saying, "Look how easy to use I am." I don't think that Paint Shop Pro ever tried to pretend it was the industry standard, but I think it always tried to offer more, like vector capabilities, that Elements lacked. It was kind of like having a light version of Illustrator tagging along. And some of Paint Shop Pro's more recent versions have been very centered on appealing to photographers. The last version of Paint Shop Pro I actually used was version 7, but I have looked with interest at the features of the newer versions.
I have a trial version of CrossOver installed on my Mac. I installed it to try to run a Go game program which only comes for the PC. Unfortunately that program isn't supported by CrossOver. I checked and saw that I had three days left on the trial for CrossOver so I downloaded and installed Paint Shop Pro to see if it would work. It wasn't on the list of supported programs, so I wasn't optimistic. As expected the program did not run under CrossOver. So I will not be purchasing CrossOver when the trial runs out.
I still have a PC sitting on my Desk, but I really want to phase it out so I doubt I will install Paint Shop Pro on it. I'm afraid I'd like it and then I would be conflicted about phasing out the PC.
Edit: I just noticed that this is my 100th post to the forum. What a nice place this is filled with people willing to help. I'm really glad I found this forum.

Sure its different but then so many other things throughout the world are but This isn't unique to Adobe. I'd like to buy petrol at US prices but I can't. I bet the Norwegians would like to buy beer at UK prices but they can't.
You either buy it or don't and the price of many things is set by what people will pay for it. ;)

I would like to see more black and white as well. I might even be forced to download it for the PC and play with it for a month.

Can't help feeling a little aggrieved though:( us Brits seem to have to pay through the nose for everything!

Sue....
Just accept it - you're not paying through the nose - your paying the cost of it in the UK. It is what it is. :)

Terri, Michelle and Sue,
Thanks.
I may do a montage using just BW, one other advantage of X2 is that you can save as a PSD file.

Hi Kev ...
That colour to B&W is quite impressive  and at $40 it was a great bargain !! My stepson is a fan of PSP but seeing that it is windows only I haven't tried it.
I don't know where we went wrong with my eldest stepson ... all the other kids are Mac users like we are :D:D:D

Kev, I especially love the lion black and white. His mane looks so mangled/tangled, so real like. (A bit like my two year old grand daughter's hair in the morning:))

I changed from PC to Mac in May this year and was very disappointed that I couldn't use PSP. However, I kept my old PC so I could still use PSP for vector drawing. :)
Having said that, I have been so wrapped up in learning about Elements that I haven't had time to do anything with PSP. :D
BTW, Nice images Kev.;)

Hi George ...
Have you thought about using Boot Camp or Parallels to run it in ? ... if you do that then you won't need to use the PC

Kev,
I'm so glad to see your work in b/w. It's impressive! The details in the lion's mane and in the water around the tiger are so vivid. I do hope there's more B/W in the horizon!:)
