No where in step two does it say if you fill your Rectangle with black. By looking at the picture, I'm assuming you do. Ofcourse when I try to, my Paintbucket Tool won't fill the entire box unless I go to Edit>Fill Selection.
My setting when I have my paintbucket tool selected is: Fill Foreground, Mode Normal, Opacity 100%, Tolerance 32, Anti-Alias, Contiguous and Use All Layers are all unchecked. What settings have I messed up on?
I'm using PSE4, Windows.

If your colors (lower left) are set on default (B&W foreground/background), the rectangles will automatically fill with black.

Hi. I haven't received my copy yet, so I don't know what the final wording ended being, but here is what I wrote for Step 2:

" Set your colors to the default Black and White by pressing the D key on your keyboard. Choose the Rectangle tool (U) and, using the ruler and/or grid lines as a guide, draw a rectangle. We made ours 2 inches x 6 inches. With the Rectangle tool still active, hold down Ctrl-Alt-Shift (Mac: Command-Option-Shift) and click-drag the shape to the right to duplicate the rectangle on the same layer. Position as desired (we put ours 1 grid square away from the first)."

Does this help clear the waters any? Again, I'm sort of guessing here, since I haven't seen the final version...

Since I am using PSE4 and not 6, some of the functions don't work the same. For instance, When you say choose the Rectangle tool (U), the shortcut in PSE4 is M.
I'm just trying to find the same steps the old way. I'll keep playing with it and see what I can come up with. I might have to wait to do it correctly until I receive PSE7.

Ah ha, yes, that could be tricky. Ask away if/when you get stuck and we'll try to help as much as possible. I never used version 4, but I'm fairly confident the tutorial can be done in just about any version.

I think I have pretty much figured it out, but did a little different take on it. You can see what I have done under Before & After, labeled Hana. Tell me what you think.

I am trying to do this tut in PSE6 and I am getting stuck every step of the way. Not sure if this is because on my lack of experience or the bugs of PSE6. First my rectangles also do not fill with black even after setting the defaults, but I did the ol' ALT - backspace there. No problem.

Now I am stuck with the Shape Selection Tool. This 100% does not work with my copy of PSE6. I have reinstalled, restarted and re-prayed every way possible to no avail. PLEASE help explain why this does not work.

I swear if Adobe wants another dime out of my wallet they certainly need to fix their products. They seem to get worse every year.

UPDATE: I got it to work .. YEAH!!! But, the Shape selection tool does not work. I had to adjust one shape at a time to get the effect.
