Hello ...and thanks in advance if you can help me out.
I have one main picture. I want to add a picture of rust, yes, I said rust(lol) overtop of it and then erase over the areas of my main picture that I don't want to have rust on it (ie. faces, arms). It is basically an effect I am looking for.
Can you help me. I can get the main pic and then I get the rust picture but can't figure out how to merge them.
Thanks so very much

Hi ...
... and welcome to the Village :)
Lets start right at the beginning ...
Open up your rust picture and do Select>All then Edit>Copy
Now open up your people image and do Edit>Paste
You now should have the rust image on top of the people.
Go to the layers palette and lower the opacity of the rust layer so that you can see the people thought it and then get the eraser and erase the rust from the faces etc.
Once you have done that then change the opacity of the rust layer back to 100%.
There are more complex ways of doing this but I think that this way is probably the easiest for you :)

Hi Cheryl,
Welcome to the Village. :)
Once you have your rust image in place, try experimenting with different blend modes on that layer (from the drop down menu above the layers palette) at different opacities, you should find something you like,
