View Full Version : Tips on upgrading from PSE4 to PSE7??

Hello - new to the forum here and have a few quick questions I hope someone can help with...
I'm currently using PSE4 and am planning on purchasing PSE7. This will be my first time upgrading PSE.
Any benefit in purchasing the "Full" version over the "Upgrade" version (they are being offered at the same price). I've heard that there really isn't any difference between the 2. Correct?
I prefer to do clean installs whenever possible (meaning uninstall previous versions and install the new version). I've read also that if I uninstall PSE4 the catalog, tags, etc..remains intact. So I'm thinking my gameplan would be to uninstall PSE4 and then install the full version of PSE7. My new PSE7 would then be able to read the catalog that had existed from PSE4. This sound correct or am I off base?
Any other tips or concerns regarding upgrading?
Just trying to get a handle on how to handle the upgrade. Thanks much in advance for any helpful replies! :)

New versions of Elements are all stand-alone versions so there is no upgrading of older versions (upgrade just means you get a price break by virtue of owning an older registered version)
So there's no point in unininstalling older versions before loading newer versions - in fact I wouldn't advise doing it as you might want to keep the older version loaded for a while to see that everything is working fine with the new one (I still have most of my older versions loaded).
When you go to install PSE7 it will likely give you the option of converting the PSE4 catalog although I'd advise against doing it then. I always prefer to make sure the new version is installed and working right. Then make sure the old catalog is still working right in the older version (and doing a clean-up if necessary). Then when everything is right do the conversion to the new catalog. It will keep the old PSE4 catalog and produce a new PSE7 catalog (note that if it's like PSE6 not all things get carried over during the conversion). After that when everything is working right you can then uninstall the older version if you want.

Thanks for replying Tony, your response is very helpful.
Part of my reasoning for removing PSE4 first is that if I remove it after I've installed PSE7, some shared files that PSE7 needs may get deleted with the PSE4 uninstall.
But installing PSE7 without removing PSE4 would give me a chance to make sure everything is working fine before removing what I know is already working....Good advice - thanks!

PSE7 is a separate program from PSE4. It gets installed in an entirely separate directory than PSE4. Having PSE4 on your computer will not affect in any way the validity of a PSE7 installation, just as having Microsoft Word installed will not affect the validity of a PSE7 installation.

Hi ..
In the past there have been some problems when someone has had two versions installed and then uninstalled a previous version ... one file that tended to be removed was Adobe Gamma.
Later on Adobe Gamma was included on the install disk so that you could simply install it again if it was removed ..

Thanks for replying Wendy - appreciate it much.
Hmmm. That's my concern with removing PSE4 later. I guess I could just leave PSE4 installed but I like to keep my system as clean as possible.
Any advice on how to transfer my PSE4 catalog to PSE7 after I've removed PSE4? Right now I back up my catalog to an external hard drive. Could I do the following -
Uninstall PSE4
Install PSE7
Restore my backed up PSE4 catalog from my external drive.
I also thought I read somewhere on this message board that if I uninstall PSE that the catalog remains. So could I just point my clean copy of PSE7 to the existing PSE catalog?
Hope this make sense and thanks again for any helpful replies!
