View Full Version : At LAST! A successful border breakout!

Yes, folks. I've been trying to do the border breakout ever since the tutorial came out. And I never could get the angles/proportion right on it. Tonight I decided to try one more time, using the Indian photo I used for a different effect, and posted yesterday. And this time it worked! This one took persistence. And lots of "throw-aways." :D

Pauline, it's just a crop shape from the cookie cutter. They're fun to use.

Thanks Linda. I'll have to watch for that one. It has a neat effect.
There are so many crop shapes that it can take forever to find what you want!

I think it looks great, but is it really a border breakout?

Hi Brice -- well . . . I think it's a border breakout, since I used the border breakout video to do it. However, I did forget to add the shadow behind the rectangular picture that he's breaking out of. I may go back and work with that. If I do, I'll re-post the picture.

Very pretty!
Maybe instead of a border breakout it's a border pop out?

:) Sounds fine to me, Kerriann. Thanks everyone, for the comments. It's always fun to put something up for comments. You all are so KIND!

Linda ...
Its a border breakout to me .... after all it breaks out of the border of the photos :)
I just went back for another look and do think that the shadow will help the effect .., please do let us see it when you have done it :)

I must be some kind of idiot! I was so captured by the outside border of the entire image that missed the picture frame inside. So much to see that the OBVIOUS border break is lost in the beauty of the image.
Sorry Linda. Forgive me. I wasn't trying to be critical. I couldn't see the forrest for the trees.

Linda,
That is a trerrific effect!
Can I ask where I might find a tutprial for it? I have a dog photo just waiting for a similar treatment!
Thanks,
Beryl, a total newbie!

Hi Beryl ...
There is a tutorial in the Subscriber area ... its under Videos, called Border Breakout and is dated 26th August 2005. It really is a good one.
There are lots of other Video tutorials in there and if you are not already a subscriber then it is well worth subscribing ... at the last count there were over 70 video tutorials in there plus lots of other things:)

I noticed that I was a border break out Linda, but the fact that the Indian is so colourful and the background is so beautiful the actual picture frame really does get lost in this one. Now that you've perfected it and know what you're doing, I think I would do another one with a different picture and take it off this one.

You didnt' confuse me! I just thought it looked like a jack in the box "popping" out of it's box! :)

Great job, Linda. I really liked the outer edge along with the breakout portion of the image. What did you do to make that?

Thanks, Mike. First I put a new layer, with the contrasting darker color below the "cloud" layer. Then on the "cloud" layer, I used one of the crop shape cookie cutters to cut the shape out, letting the darker color show at the edges and through the little holes. I then added a bevel and (I think) a slight shadow to the cropped layer. Try it . . . it's fun.

Linda ...
I have to admit that up to now I have dismissed the cookie cutter as not being very useful ... but the way you have used it opens up all sorts of possibilities.
So thank you for sharing how you did it :)

I really haven't used the cookie cutter much at all (because of course for some reason I'm dense about putting it on it's own layer and cutting out rather than getting 'holes' in things) Maybe we need some cookie cutter lessons! Also I would never have thought to use bevel edges, etc!!
Thanks Linda!! While you might have struggled with this technique, you ended up teaching us something!
Did you also make the cloud background? It's lovely and soft and the colours are perfect.

Thanks everyone. I'm glad I was able to put something kind of new on the table. I've received so much here, that it's a joy to be able to give back a little. Yes, Pauline, the part that got cut out with the cookie cutter was just a layer with rendered clouds on it.

Hi Tyler -- Yes, Jodi, Wendy and so many others are really outstanding when it comes to helping everyone out. What would this forum be without people like that?! I love being here, because everyone is so friendly and helpful. I especially like the balance that is here -- helpful suggestions for improvements without a critical spirit. It's a "soft place to fall." :)

Well - I finally completed my first border breakout from scratch (in my gallery). I too was having trouble with the angles and also a picture I thought would work good for it. My recent trip to Florida gave me this shot at Sea World and it seemed perfect. The quality isn't the greatest because it was raining and the colors are not real vibrant (for Florida) but it gets the point across.
