I am replacing my old scanner. Can anyone recommend a good one? I don't need one with printer attached, just a scanner.:)

Sue, I currently use the Epson V-750-M as my tool of the trade for scanning. Before that I had the Epson 4990 Pro. You did not say what specifics you were looking for but for everyday use of scanning prints, negatives and slides, with quality at a good price, I would recommend the Epson V-500 and if that is a bit much take a look at the just announced V-300. I know many of my students have the Epson 4490 or the V500 and I know they do very well, particularly if you are into scrapbooking. I am sure others will chime in with their recommendations. Hope this helps.

I have an Epson 4490 Photo-scanner. It works great as long as you are not trying to do a lot of images at once as there is no autofeed. It has three different modes so that you can scan fully automated or determine every detail such as adjust size, color curve, despecale etc.
For those who do have a ton of photos they may want to try having them converted to JPGs at a place like http://scanmyphotos.com/. They will do a 1000 photos for about $50 as long as you presort them by size (must be out of the plastic).

I agree with Ric's recommendations. I use the Epson V750 Pro, and love it. It handles everything I can throw at it, and then some.
The 750 is Epson's top of the line, and if you're going to do a lot of scanning - negatives and prints - it's worth every penny. The V500 is quite good as well, for less $$.
The 4490 is a nice, less-expensive scanner, and I know lots of people who love theirs.

It is only for home use. I need to update my scanner as I have Vista and it won't 'make friends' with my Canon scanner:(

Been trying to track down the Epson 4990 (the price is as much as I want to pay) BUT it seems to be unavailable:eek: If anyone knows where, in the UK, I can find one then please tell :)

Sue, I believe the 4990 is out of production. You might consider either the V-700 or the V-500 as an alternative. Hope this helps.

Ric, just had a online chat with Epson. I asked the agent if it was being discontinued and he said 'definitely not'. So on past form that could mean YES!

Sue, the 4990, while I had it in my scanning arsonal, was an outstanding scanner in its' generation. In fact, I still miss it from time to time because I thought the print scans were beautiful. However, I moved on to the V-750-M because I needed the ability to due wet mount scans of my 6x7 and 4x5 transparencies, and I have no regrets. The scans are equally impressive from the 750 and having just completed scanning 20 old tin-types from the early 20th century, this modern marvel of a scanner is just unbelievable, setting new standards in excellence and quality.
Back to the 4990, if you can find one, it would be a worthwhile investment shy of the V-700 or V-750.

Taken the plunge and ordered the Epson 4490 - £128.00 is the best price I can get it for. :)It seems this is also being discontinued! The only reason I need a new one is that my Canon is causing trouble with Vista. It caused a big problem the other day and dissappeared altogether from my computer:eek: Whilst I like Vista, a lot of things won't work with it. Nero(unless I upgrade), Corel Print Office I even need a firewire to make the video camera connect with the computer now instead of USB2:mad:
