When I create a type layer using black as the color the letters doesn't show.
What gives?

A couple things to check. Is the font size big enough to see. Is the area you are trying to cover too dark. Are you on the type mask tool instead of the type tool? Is black selected in the type tool bar as (not just in the default foreground).

Font's big enough. I've even tried creating a new blank file ( 50X100 ) to see if I could see the type.
Area's white. Black's selected in the type tool bar.

That set of dimensions creates a blank image about 1/3 inch by 1/6 inch.
Try setting the dimensions to the blank file in inches, e.g., 8"X10" at 300 pixels per inch and try again with a black font.

JeffI did that. Still all I get is a dot and no visible type.

At those dimensions (50x100 ant 300 ppi) you should still be able to see 12 point type - it should be about a quarter of the height. Have you tried resetting the type tool. Click the little arrow at the left end of the tool options bar and select Reset Tool.

Thanks.
I opened up an old file and tried the type tool successfully, closed it with saving any changes of course. Then I tried again with the new psd that I wanted to add type to and it worked!
Next time I'll try the reset tool.
