View Full Version : Date info on JPG files

I have large number (5K+) of scanned old photos in my Elements 6.0 catalog. I have placed the dates they were actually taken onto them, anywhere from 1880 to the present. I have written the Keyword Tags and Properties into the Photo's.
I would now like to export all of these into JPG format with the name of the photo and the date is was actually taken displayed on it. I can then send these to a memory card and put in a Digital Picture Frame for my parents. Mom really wants to see the dates on the photos in the Digital Picture Frame.
Using the Editor I can get the file name, but the date is the file date on picture, not catalog date taken. I have tried IrfanView but have not been able to get the date of the picture into the photo.
In Organizer, if I look at the Metadata, I can see the field Date Time Orginial under Camera Data(Exif) has the information. But when I run InfanView Batch Conversion I can get the date to show up. Under Advanced->Add overlay Text->Settting. I have tried various combinations of $Ex in the text section and am getting nothing. $N and other placeholders work but not $E or $I.
Am I missing something or is there another tool I should use.
Thanks

Take a look through this thread:

that would suggest that $E36867 should work in Irfanview if the correct date is showing as DateTimeOriginal in the Irfanview EXIF data.

When I load a test file in Irfanview the only date is the file Date/Time. (Image->Information). The value matches the file modified date shown in Windows Explorer.

When I load the exact same file into PSE6,, the editor, the original file date of 1948-01 is there. (File->File info->Advanced->Exif properties->exif: DateTimeOriginal). There is also an entry in Camera Data 1 for Date Time: which is also 1948-01.

The photo was scanned in directly to PSE6 and saved as a psd file of approx 38 meg.

Does Irfan not read the exif data in psd files all that well?

Thanks

I doubt that Irfanview will read psd EXIF data. You'll need to Write Tag Info to Files in the Organizer and then save as a jpeg and check that Irfanview is seeing the correct date as DateTimeOriginal. I've done that with jpeg files but not with psd files so not quite sure whether Elements will get the date right - dates can get very confusing in EXIF data as different programs/file formats can interpret different date fields differently.

The writing of metadata into the files from orgainizer worked for all those files stored as PSD files. I then exported them as JPEGS and they had the exif data. IrFanView then worked to add the date info onto the prints.
Thanks for the help.

Now for the next part. Those files I have in Organizer in TIFF format did not work. Apparently Elements does not know how to write EXIF data into TIF files. Seem strange for the biggest company in photos not to know how to do this.
Is there a preferred process for converting files to PSD from TIFF within organizer and not loosing any of my tag info?

Thanks
