I saw this big spider just after dark tonight out on the web on my patio. I was so surprised to see the resulting photo. Weird is what I call it. Any ideas as to why it turned out like this?

HI Tina
My guess is the flash fired to lighten up the background and washed out all the foreground...very cool.

Hi Tina,
My guess is the same as Garys. That looks like a big Orb spider-they make the most beautiful spiral wheel-shaped webs. Check early tomorrow morning with the dew, you might be able to get some good shots then.
Enjoy,

I think that the umbrella bounced the light back in all directions so the foreground is also washed out. it's like when you bounce light off the ceiling onto the sublect. But who would have predicted that. Pretty neat.

I am on my way out to see if the spider is still there this morning. There is a heavy dew this morning and should be interesting to see if I can catch the web. I have noticed lots of webs around attatched to just about everything in the yard. Must be the time of the year that spiders love.

Not sure about your guess Gary, I think it's the radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker & turned him into Spider-man, that seems to be the logical answer.

I wonder if spot metering on the spider would have helped the situation.
