Need help with basics

Hi,
I have P.Elements 4 classroom in a book,but it is to techical for me.Can
someone point me to a video on how to use the split tool,on trimming
clips and how to put a photo in a video while some one is still talking and bring them back again (almost like a picture in a picture)? Or tell me in lamons terms how to do this or a thread that already taks about this.?

I know nothing about video.
