layer syles??

can anyone direct me to a place where i can get a description of all the layers style and what their effect is on each new layer created (ie. lumosity, hard light, vivid light, color burn, saturation)

I think you mean layer blend modes. Do a Google search and you'll find a lot of descriptions ranging from simple to advanced. Here's a simple one:
