Filters not working properly

Hi everyone,
I currently have Photoshop Elements 6.0 For some reason, my filters arent working like before. For example, everytime i apply the "diffuse glow" instead of being close to that "white glow" it simply paints BLACK! i dont know if its possible to restore ( reset) the default settings on the filters. Can anyone help please? Thanks

Try resetting preferences by holding down control,alt,shift while restarting PSE. When asked if want delete preferences, say yes.

Look at the foreground/background colors and check they are at the defaults (D will get you the defaults). A lot of filters are effected by those colors - diffuse glow is one of them (the glow is the background color so I bet you have it set to black).
