Hello;

This thread its related to this one: http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39858

I'm very glad and happy that some people ask for this tutorial, I hope this statisfies your request.

The Artistic Filter Effect

Steps that I follow to create my “New Effects”.

I hope that the Mac users forgives me, but I don't know the short cuts for the Mac.

1. Open your favorite picture in the Full Edit mode (Ctrl-I)
2. Once in the editor select the Background Layer.
3. Duplicate your Background pressing Ctrl-J, now you are suppose to have two Layers; the Background and the new one called Layer 1.
4. Select Layer 1.
5. Go to Filter>Artistic>Cutout, and here just for now choose the following values; (4, 4, 2) for Number Levels, Edge Simplicity and Edge Fidelity. And press OK.
6. Still with Layer 1 selected go to Filter>Brush Strokes>Accent Edges; and here just for now choose the following values; (2, 38, 5) for Edge width, Edge Brightness and Smoothness. And press OK.
7. Don’t move, you are still with Layer 1 selected right? If not selected. Go to the Blending Modes and choose Vivid Light.
8. And that’s it. You are finish.

If you wish you can play with the values to increment or decrease the effects. You can also reduce the Opacity to have different results.

Additional information: If you change the step #6 for Filter>Artistic>Poster Edges and use the default values you will have what it is called one of the Andy Warhol’s Posterized Effect. I use this effect as my base to start creating these kinds of effects, your Imagination is the limit.

Well I hope you likes this tutorial, my first by the way. C&C are very welcome.

You can find The Andy Wharhol’s Effects in the Philip Andrews book titled “Advanced Photoshop Elements 6 for Digital Photographers”, at page 238, chapter 7. This is a great book.

Here I include the link to two examples that I just post in my gallery:

I deleted the part with the extra step because when I resized it for Pixentral it looked a like Halloween!! The full size pic doesn't look that way. I just added Ctl I at the end. Oops...forgot I did a hue/sat adj layer too.

Liberty;

The Effect that I used in the Picadilly Circus it is an effect that I found by mistake surfing the web during my lunch hour. It is really an effect for Photoshop, but its very easy to convert or use the instructions for PSE.

Here is the link; Hope you enjoy it.

Hello;

Now if you want to keep having fun with this try the follwing;

Using the Andy Warhol's effects interchange the steps and keep the rest the same, but, and this is the important part, try different blend modes and you will see some cool results.

For Example:

5. Filter>Artistic>Poster Edges and use the default values.

6. Still in Layer 1. Filter>Artistic>Cutout, and here choose the following values; (4, 4, 2). And press OK.

Don't forget the use different blend modes until you fond the effect that you like the most.

I'm sorry I caused so much confusion. :eek: I did your tut and added the above step and I posted it. When I looked at the pic (above) in Pixentral I didn't like it so I was in the process of deleting it when Sue posted a comment. She read my original post while I was deleting it. I know it's confusing.

I'm sorry...just pretend I'm not here!! :o

Thank you for the tutorial. It goes well with these photos of an old mill that I took last week. I used Poster Edges instead of Accented Edges . I placed a layer filled with 50% grey above the photo layer and used the texturizer-canvas-on it.
