View Full Version : Making a sheet of transparent glass

I have seen graphics where it appears that there is an image of a sheet of glass, elevated above a background image, upon which text is written; or an image is placed.
Is it possible to create such an image, as a layer, and make it appear as though is inches off the background?
The second part of the question is almost a separate issue. I have always wondered how to create the illusion of space between layer.

Wendy has a tut in the PET subscriber section for how to make a sheet of glass. Creating space between layers can be as simple as adding a drop shadow and/or playing with the transform- particularily skew. Check out the OOB threads/tuts as the same techniques used there can achieve the look I think you are going for.

Using my browser's search feature I found Wendy's, very impressive, "stained glass" tutorial but I was was looking for something that was more like window glass; with a splash of reflected light and slightly green edges.

Out Of the Box or Break Outs, where the image spills out over the edges of the frame.

Hi Mike ...
Floating transparent glass is all about the illusion of things you see reflected in it.
Try creating a new layer then get a soft brush & white as your colour and do a few diagonal lines across the layer. Next give it a gaussian blur and then reduce the opacity of the layer.
To get a better idea of what I mean take a look in the Scrapbooking Section Tutorials ... Making a Key Chain. Near the end of that it shows how I made the glass for the keychain.
If its a larger piece of glass then I will also add a very low opacity photograph to it ... to act as the reflections in the glass.
Tke a look at this image and you will see what I mean:

I fooled around with this technique but only got the effect of a slightly blurry smudge on the background image
But I will keep at it,

Just wanted you to know I appreciate your suggestions and that I'm acting on them.
Maybe I should write PSE Techniques with a challange
Create a stand alone, 3D, sheet of transparent glass, with characteristic green edges; that could be saved and used over and over by dragging it into layers.

Thanks.
Not sure how to find what he's referring to :o I tried searching OOB and Out of Box but nothing came up.

Forgive my density :o but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking for here. I searched Out of Bounds and got this page.

I'm really not sure what I'm supposed to find in OOB techniques that will help me with my glass question.
Maybe I'm way out of my league here; too much of a novice, to be pursuing this issue.

I think some of the same techniques(skewing and drop shadows) used to make these effects would help in separating or giving the appearance of space between layers.
