Yesterday Baker went to the dog park and swam for the first time. My daughter was taking pictures and I had the wrong mode set on my camera. Anyways....... I used layers of screen on them and added a photo filter but I don't know what to do with all the color noise. Is there a better way? Can I fix these?

Michelle: Underexposure is a primary cause of noise; that's one reason why exposing for the highlights and bringing back the shadows with PSE doesn't always work so well.
You might want to try opening the original in Camera Raw, then use the Noise Reduction sliders on the Detail tab.
Also, using the Shadows/Highlights tool may give a somewhat different result than using Screen blending mode. Not sure how different...

I tried Camera Raw; the noise seems pretty resistant to the Noise Reduction sliders. Bummer....

Michelle,
If you don't have a stand alone Noise Program such as Imagenomics-Noiseware.
You could reduce the noise by going to: Filter>Noise>Reduce Noise. Change slider adjustments until you are satisfied. If there is too much noise for one application, save file and run it through again.

Like Chuck says if you PSE5 or PSE6 you can open in Camera Raw and adjust the exposure, recovery and fill to fix the exposure bit but the color noise is more of a problem. I tried the color noise in ACR and Neat Image and although you can get rid of it you lose the detail as well so. Best I could do quickly was this:

Chuck: Thanks - I was quite surprised how much could be brought out of the shadows. One thing I forgot to mention was that there seemed to be a lot of green color noise on the dog. I did a bit of green hue/sat adjustment which did I think made the noise a bit less obvious. Probably could have done more as there's still some green tinge showing.

Thank you guys for the advice and examples. I do have Noiseware and I started playing with that. It's a hit and miss cuz I don't totally understand what the different settings do, but I do see an improvement. I will also try the RAW as well. Right now the house is awake and I have to but this down....:(
Thanks again!!

Hi Michelle
Below is a quick go.
Just duplicate your background
Change the new layers mode to color
Then blur this layer watching your edit screen
The more you blur the more the color noise will begone..but you will also lose a little overall color intensity..balance the amount of blur to make the best compromise.
Then use your normal noise reduction routine and sharpen as needed.
If you like increas color saturation with a adjustment layer.

Well, I worked all morning with a combination of all the tips. I was feeling ok, then I took another look at Butch's picture and his detail and color is so much better. (no surprise there, huh) When I did the blur filter was I suppose to do it about 5-10 times? I liked using Raw first. The house is up again so I'm off.:D
