View Full Version : Accidentally deleted drop shadow .asl file

I'm using Elements 6. I accidentally deleted a couple of the drop shadows in a .asl file. I didn't realise the rubbish bin permanently deleted an effect .
Is it possible to restore these? I have tried to reset to default settings but I guess that wasn't right.

Many of us have learned that the hard way. Will need to re-install. If I did this right should be able get from this attachment.

Hi ..

If you deleted it whilst you were in the styles palette then this should work to recover it:

Rename the Mediadatabase.db3 to MediadatabaseOLD.db3

It is located at C: Documents & Setting\All Users|Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\ en-US

and then restart Elements ... the Mediadatabase.db3 will rebuild but you may have to wait a while for it to do so.

It just makes Elements rebuild its database and hopefully your styles will then be back. Once it has rebuilt then you can delete the MediadatabaseOLD .db3 file.

How did you delete it? Do you mean that when you drag a layer effect up to the little trash can, it un-installs it? I thought it just removed it from the project. Wonder how many things I've lost and don't realize it. This is a bummer.

Mary ellen, The styles section has it's on trash can next to the apply button. This is the booby trap one. It actually deletes the style rather than unapply the style.

Many thanks Linda. I really appreciate that. I'm going to sound stupid now but how do you install it. I unzipped and placed it in the Presets Style folder but it won't show the effects I deleted. I have closed PE and shutdown the pc but still nothing.

Thanks Wendy but I have searched my files but cannot locate mediadatabase, the path you mention doesn't work, could that be because I'm on Vista?

Mary Ellen, yes that's what happened to me - I did it once and didn't realise, it was only the second time I did it I noticed. It's annoying at how easy it is to do.

Thanks
Jill

Linda,
I was afraid she was talking about the trash can in the layers pallette! I hadn't even noticed that lil can at the bottom of the Effect pallet. Luckily! Thanks for setting my mind at ease.

Hi Mary Ellen ..

the path in Vista is:

C:Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\ en-US

and you will need to switch on the show hidden files and folders in windows to be able to see it.

If you want to install the style then it goes here in PSE6:

C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\<en_US or your locale>\Photo Creations\layer styles

but then you will need an xmp file to go with the style in order for it to appear in the correct place.

Wendy, I had the exact same problem, and your simple solution saved me the trouble to reinstall the whole thing.
The mediadatabase took only a few minutes to rebuild and now all is OK
Thanks again!

Yeah, I tried that and I couldn't find it. I have Vista, so the file storages are a little different.
