View Full Version : Intuos 2 tablet + PSE6 + Vista = headache!

I've just dug out my old Wacom Intuos 2 tablet to work with PSE6 on my new Vista PC. I downloaded the latest drivers from the Wacom site, installed them, connected the tablet and, presto, it worked fine. In fact it worked with everything...except PSE6! When I launch that all control via the tablet freezes and I have to use my regular mouse to get control back.
Anyone else had this problem? Is there a patch for PSE6? I've checked Wacom's site without any joy so I'd be grateful for any ideas or suggestions.
Thanks.

Hi ...
I wonder if it maybe worth emailing Wacom to see what they say ... they may be aware of it and have a solution.

I think the mouse is fighting for control with you Wacom. I have the opposite problem - if the tablet is plugged in and the pen close enough to register, the mouse will freeze. I can move the pen away. You may have to unplug the mouse. Try that once at least to see if that is indeed the issue.

I'd ask Wacom. I just did the same thing but with my old Wacom Graphire 4. I, also, use PSE6 and Vista. It works fine, I think! I haven't gotten the hang of it yet.
Did you have to do some sort of mapping or something when you first hooked it up? Mine didn't ask me to do anything, but it doesn't seem quite right. It's especially hard to get ahold of buttons on the top bar. It's like I have to go above the top of the tablet. Not sure I'm making sense. It could be just a learning curve issue. Any tips?

Thanks for the really useful replies, all. This really is one of the best forums for quality help and support that I've ever come across.
januaryman: Good point about the mouse conflicting with the Wacom tablet. Trouble is I have a cordless keyboard/mouse unit so isolating the mouse is a problem - unless I take the batteries out, I suppose. However, both tablet and mouse function flawlessly outside of PSE6, it's only when PSE is active that the tablet freezes.
mschall: Wacom's software loaded without incident and the tablet worked without any setup procedures and seems to cover my whole screen easily. Nice to hear that someone else is trying to 'recycle' their old hardware.
Wendy: Good idea. I'll drop Wacom a line. I couldn't find anything in their FAQs about it, though.

Rick,
I had a lot of problems with my tablet and Vista. It would seem to work fine then it would start acting funny like mschall noted and actually pse would start freezing up when I tried to use my pen. Eventually my system would tell me I needed to reinstall the drivers which I would do and then everything would work well for awhile ---then the whole thing would start over. This occurred about 4x. With this last driver reinstall it really seemed to solve the problem. I'm going to look and see if I can remember what I did.

Hi Rick,
I did recheck what I had done and it was just to reinstall the drivers again. I noticed when I did the reinstall the last time they had new downloads--7/2008 and 4/2008. I hope this might help, I KNOW how frustrating it can be.

Vista can be so frustrating but it seems to have gotten better for me with the SP1.
Good luck,
