View Full Version : PSE 5 and Vista

Installed PSE 5 on my pc, which uses windows Vista, and it installed cleanly and ran well for about 6 months. I then uninstalled (don't ask me why) and then after about 1 month I tried to reinstall from the same cd.
It appeared to install successfully but when I try to open it from the desktop icon it fails and posts "searching for presets" The pc has contained PSE 4 throughout all this and it still opens and works well throughout.
While the PSE 5 was uninstalled I did add a plugin to PSE 4 so I could open .NEF raw files from my Nikon D40x camera and the plugin is working well.
Could the presence of the modified PSE 4 program on my pc be causing the reinstallation problems of the PSE 5. I am reluctant to uninstall the working PSE 4 to prove the point, for obvious reasons. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Bryn

I seriously doubt that the ACR update in PSE4 has anything to do with your problem. Have you installed the 5.0.2 patch for PSE5? If not, try that.

Thanks Juergen for your reply,
The version shows as 5.02 but I tried to install the patch with the response "patch already installed". As I said in my previous response, it did install and perform without problems on this same computer six months ago. So the puzzle continues.

Hi Bryn; I am new to this board but also am using PSE 5 with Vista and have had similar problems reinstalling PSE.
Have you disabled your anti-virus software and also turned off Vista's protection mode. Once I learned to take these two steps first, my reinstalls worked as advertised.
I had and still have other hang-ups with this combination but thats another story for another thread.
Hope this helps.

Hi Dick,
Thanks for your observations about PSE 5.
I decided last week to try a plan B as I called it. I downloaded from Adobe a copy of the latedt PS E 6, which has a 30 day free trial, my thought being if it failed to install also then the problem was in my system. However it installed and worked well from the start and it has some new features over v5 which let me open my raw .NEF Nikon files and adjust them and lots of other new stuff.
So, in 25 days or so I have to decide to buy it or go back to my v5 problems. Some other input I got about the v5 problem was it could be that when I uninstalled, it was not complete and some remnants may be in the registry. That sounds like "brain surgery" to me so I may try your thoughts---------but then, this v6 is new and different and working so well! ?
Thanks,
Bryn

Hi there
I just loaded PSE 5 into my laptop with vista and after a major organizer problem and other issues I finally came across something that made everything work properly...go to msconfig, services and uncheck adobe active file monitoring. The site I saw it on said it doesn't know why it works but it did for me!! Everything loaded smoothly after that
it's worth a try :)
Good luck
