View Full Version : Happy mistakes

Wellllllllll.. we all spend a lot of time lamenting over our bad photos, usually due to some setting or two we forgot to change/check before pressing that ever so touchy shutter button.
I thought I would start a thread where we could post some of our mistakes, that for some strange reason, turned out to be kinda cool.
Maybe not award winning, but nifty to us in some sort of way.:)
I'm just starting to get an online sharing thing sort of set up. So I'm just trying this flickr link to see how it goes.

If there is enough interest or participation I will set up a comments thread similar to the challenges.

Well Gary, at first I was expecting something way out there, but when I saw your image, I was surprised. It actually looks rather nice, soft, kind of winter like painting. I would say that indeed this particular one is a "keeper" in its' own unique way. I like it.

Thanks Ric
I took a couple at that spot forgetting to check the meter. Checked the LCD on the second one and there were more blinkies than not.
I figured it was lost but I never delete.:D
Got home and opened it up and was pleasantly surprised.
Hindsight being 20/20, a tripod and a duplicate at the proper exposure turned into a line drawing and put over top would be a great finishing touch.
Oh well.
C'mon ..post one .. you gotta have something...lol

Sorry Gary, I don't have a mistake to show, though I have had many in my life. Actually I was looking through some 'Chromes from back in '92 of something I shot with the wrong settings, and I knew it the moment I tripped the shutter. Long story short, it turned out to be rather interesting and I told myself if I ever get the chance to print it that I would. Well...now I have to go through over 3100 chromes that I took that year...scan it...and print it...now where did that little guy go?:D

One happy mistake was back in my film days. A roll didn't fully rewind and I loaded it in again thinking it was a fresh roll. One of the double exposures actually won a prize in a contest!

Gary, that is indeed a very happy mistake. I doubt you could have gotten that effect if you had tried, or even thought of it. I guess that 's what makes it such a happy mistake. I really like it.

Thanks for the kudos ... I was really hoping to see some others though.:)
Laurie... I think you under estimate my ineptitude.:p

Gary - I think the problem with this thread was that, speaking for myself, most of my photography mistakes don't turn out to be either "happy" or "kinda cool!" As a matter of fact, most are downright embarrassing!
Some of my finest work yet! :o

I always liked this mistake of my cat, Angus. To me it says exactly what he is, a big snout. No need to click on the thumbnail, for this is it, only bigger!

Gary -
Fun idea! I remembered these shots as being interesting accidents. I expected the plane propellor to be blurred out, but got an entirely different result. These are from a business trip to central Oregon a few winters ago.

That's pretty weird looking, Bill. Looking at those I would say you were lucky the plane got you there in one piece. Sure looks like something is missing!

That is really weird... how at least in your mind, did that be the end result??

Boy Gary ... I have no idea. The one thing I've noticed on the shots, is that as the plane is ascending and the engine is really cranking, there seem to be about 6 propeller captures. On landing, with the engine slowed way down there only seem to be 4 or 5 captures.
Here's the plane on the ground. It's a four blade propeller if that gives a clue. And it doesn't appear to be haunted. Maybe one blade has a different reflective quality??

The camera at the time was a little P&S, Nikon I believe. Maybe the happiest mistake was that we made it.;)

Bill's strange propeller shots reminded me of this one I found when scanning old 35mm negs. I think the little red light is on a VCR sitting on top of the TV. Any guess as to what movie it was? That looks like Darryl Hannah maybe?

Bill, it looks like the propellers were falling off!! You were really lucky that you got to your destination!!

... I expected the plane propellor to be blurred out, but got an entirely different result...Whoa... how could this happen?
Could it be that the sensor pixels are scanned sequentially, at some really high frequency, while the shutter is open - rather than just grabbing them all at once? I suppose that might make some sense of things... but why would it have captured the fastest part of the rotating prop, and not the slower parts?

Very cool ..until I clicked on the link I thought it was the edge of a gear.

Good thought. Nothing I could come up with made any sense at all.

Gary, the thing I thought was weird is that the images seen to flow OUT of the TV screen, first in a downward direction and then upward.
