Here is another old tut by WESTIE MOM aka Anita
I am posting this for some of our new memebers who have not been able to enjoy all the fun we had with this tut. Here we go.

Painted Effect

1. open your photo and duplicate the layer
2. Run high pass filter ( filter, other high pass) about 3
3. Set blend mode to hard light
4. Combine the layers ( Shift/Ctrl/Alt/E) Edited by adding Ctrl , sorry if this was the confusion.

5. Filter-Stylize-Diffuse- choose Anisotropic-
you can do this twice. You want to get a liquidy , smooth , painted look.

6. Unsharp mask 150/.3/0

7. Smart Blur 3/12/ High

you can increase the contrast if needed

Anita said " after playing with some different size images, I have discovered that the effect works best with images that are 800 to 1200 pixels on the long side."

Another great look for photos
Have fun

I gave this tut a try on a photograph that I took in 1998 with my first digital camera. It was the kind that took many photographs on a 3.5 inch floppy disk so you can image how tiny the file was. The photo was 480 x 640 so it is a bit smaller than the optimal resolution mentioned for the tut.

I am still working on figuring out the best way to post images, and have decided for now to use my flickr account.

I am posting a small image, and also a link to a larger version...

The small version can be found here...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3155/2698744956_0079d1ced9_m.jpg

And if you like what you see, the larger version can be found here..

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3155/2698744956_6b40fbb29b_o.jpg

I have yet to figure out the best way to host images so I can count on them being seen with the thread long term.. And there is an image attached to this that doesn't really do what I want it to do, and I can't quite figure out how to get rid of it... so please be patient with me as I learn the ins and outs of how to show my work on the forum.

This is probably the most embarassing post I have done yet!! I have tried this tut 6 different times on 4 different pics and I can't get it right. I even went back and looked at Anita's original post. I really need HELP on this one. :o:o (Please don't show this to anyone!!)

wow, lets see if we can figuer out what you are dong wrong. I will take a look at the steps and see if I can figure out why it turned out so dark. Just take it step by step and do each thing in order. I will take a look and see if I can figure it out.

Make sure after you run the high pass filter set the blend mode to hard light not Hard mix. Hard mix will make your picture very dark.

MaryLou, I might be a little on the odd side, but I kinda like the glow look!:)

Sharon, I'm glad you like the glow. Maybe it's coming from my red, embarassed face!!

Mary Lou,

I think I'm on the odd side as well. I like it! I thought it was different, yet visually appealing. Isn't that what creativity is all about? I'm going to try one like that myself -- hard mix you used?

Thanks Sepiana. I'm glad you liked it. I just tried another pic and got the same results. I followed the tut the way it was written...that's the embarassing part!!!!! Is there a doctor in the house?

Nice flower painting. It is a fun effect to try on all kind of things.

Mary Lou have you figured out what is going differet for you? Nothing is every wrong just different. I sure thought it was using hard mix instead of hard light.

OK...here is what I tried this time.

Step 1, omitted step 2, hard light, shift/ctl/alt/E and followed and then the tut as written.

I tied it this way to see if it made any difference. Basically at the end the pic looked the same as it did before I started. In the screen shoot you can see in the Smart Blur Box the pic is definately blurred.

There is probably a very simple reason why this is not working but I sure am stumped!! :o

Tina, thanks for your help.

Mary Lou,

You said you used shift/ctl/alt/E. Doesn't this create a new composite layer? I thought we were supposed to merge the layers--Ctrl-E. That's what I did anyway.

This is what the tut said 4. Combine the layers ( Shift/Alt/E). I did that and also tried shift/ctl/alt/E. I will try ctl/E and see what happens!!

Thanks Sepiana for your help. I'll be back after I try it!!!!!

I tried and it worked fine by correcting step # 4 should be (shift/control/alt/e) Make sure you follow every step and it will work for you. Let me know.
Elaine

Hope it helps

Hi Mary Lou, It is definitely Shift/Ctrl/Alt/E. If that isn't the problem, could you tell me at what point your picture goes dark?

Elaine,

When I did this tut (Post #10), I misread the instructions in step 4 and did Ctrl-E to merge down the layers. Then, I did it again and this time I used Shift/Ctrl/Alt/E to create a composite layer.

Here are the resuts side by side. The merged version is on the left; the composite layer version is on the right.

Do you see any difference? Are the colors on the composite version(right) just a bit brighter?

Mary Lou, I just did the tutorial again. I can't figure out what is happening for you. Here's the one I just did with a photo of 1500x1500 pixels.

I've just posted my attempt at this technique here:

(I haven't learned how to insert a thumbnail yet.)

Once again I followed the tut but did not get the dark pic. I did increase Smart Blur a lot to 30/40.

Thank you, thank you to all of you who helped me through this. I still don't think it is right but at least it is not glowing!! Thanks Anita for jumping aboard and helping. I love being a part of this community.

Thank you party at my house in an hour. I'm going out to get the ice cream!!!!!

Elaine, thanks for your comments. I'll definitely try other effects. This is the kind of tutorial where we can let our imagination go wild (as if I need any more encouragement to do that!!!).

Elaine, no problem at all. This is a wonderful tutorial and I intend to use it again and again.

Here's a couple more that I played with without any frustration!!

Mary Lou

Followed tut except I didn't reduce the opacity or add the film grain layer. I did change the threshold to 4 and changed the Smart Blur mode to overlay edge.

Followed tut except I didn't reduce the opacity or add the film grain layer. I did change the threshold to 4 and changed the Smart Blur mode to edge only and then I did ctl I (inverse). I really like this one. It looks like a sketch.
