Has anyone tried this weeks tutorial on restoration by Matt? It is a great technique to remove a serious crack in a photo. He did it in Photoshop and I am trying to get the same effect in Elements 6.0. I get stuck at the part where he moves the selection. If anyone wants to try it and wants to skip other parts it is a little past the middle portion. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

Elaine,
Three keys to success:
1. Do you have a computer keyboard with the auxiliary feature of arrow keys to the bottom right? You should be using the up arrow key to make sure the selection is moved up a little from the cracked area just before copy/paste.
2. Make sure that "Auto Select Layer" is unchecked when you go to move the pasted section down toward the crack. If not, you tend to move the whole photo.
3. Also, check layers palette to make sure that the appropriate layer is active for any given time during the procedure.
Let me know if any of that helps. It worked for me with Photoshop Elements 6.

Yes, I do have the arrow keys but I had to do Ctrl T to be able to activate. Then when I did the arrow keys it moved the crack selection up with it and left the original area transparent.
I figured out if I made the selection then added a new blank layer above the bottom layer I could use the move tool to shift the selection up then go to the bottom layer and copy paste. I could then use the transform tool and my arrows. I don't know what step I am missing.

Elaine,
I will try to detail what I did as much as possible to see if you can pick up on anything that you are doing differently.
1. Layer 1 is active and Quick Selection Tool selected in the Toolbox. You make a selection of the crack.
2. At this point, you are still on Layer 1 (active) and the Quick Selection Tool is still selected in the Toolbox. Go over to the Up Arrow Key and hit it until the selection moves up to a good area just above the crack.
3. At this point, you are still on Layer 1 (active) and the Quick Selection Tool is still selected in the Toolbox. Go to the Edit Menu and hit Copy. Immediately, go to the Edit Menu again and hit Paste. When you hit Paste, Layer 2 was generated automatically with the selected area pasted into Layer 2.
Are you OK with this so far? If so, I will continue as indicated by your response.

Elaine,
Something else that might help:
Before you start the procedure.....
With the Quick Selection tool active in the Toolbox, in the top left corner of the Photoshop Elements 6 interface is a tiny arrow sort of buried in the dark interface. Click on that, and try Reset Tool and/or Reset All Tools.

This is the part that doesn't work for me. Everything is as you say but when I use the arrow key it just moves around in the effects palette and does nothing with the selection.
2. At this point, you are still on Layer 1 (active) and the Quick Selection Tool is still selected in the Toolbox. Go over to the Up Arrow Key and hit it until the selection moves up to a good area just above the crack.

I found the reference to the 6.0 flaw at the thread below. I did remember that this was a flaw which is why I used ctrl T which didn't work for that purpose because it moved the crack selection and left the area transparent. The part I don't understand is how you were able to use your arrow keys in 6.0

What did you mean by:
Everything is as you say but when I use the arrow key it just moves around in the effects palette and does nothing with the selection.
What does the effects palette have to do with this?

Are you using a Mac by any chance. If you read the link to the thread it seems that they fixed the flaw in the Mac version so that would answer why it works for you.
The effects palette has absolutely nothing to do with anything but it is what happens when I use the arrow keys at the point of the tutorial where it says to do so.

I have Photoshop Elements 6, operating system Windows XP Professional.
What exactly is moving around in the Effects Palette when you are hitting the Up Arrow in the keypad to the immediate right of the main keyboard?

Elaine,
Forget my questions about the Effects Palette.
I have replicated your problem. The only problem is the fix.
I too am now in the same situation that you are in.

Elaine,
I didn't see the video but your problem sounds familiar. (I use v2.)
When you use the move tool to move a selection it will move the pixels in the selection of the active layer. If you want to move an empty selection in order to copy a different bit of the layer a different tool needs to be active. I usually choose the marquee tool but I think any of the selection tools will do.

Elaine and Karin Sue,
The issue appears to be more complicated.
I had no problem working through the tutorial in question, but found myself in Elaine's situation when I started to explore her claim that the Effects were moving around INSTEAD of the selection when she was hitting the Up Arrow Key.
Then I found myself in her situation, Effects scrolling with Arrow Key hitting. I managed to find a fix, namely rebuilding the Preferences by
1. opening Photoshop Elements 6
2. holding down Shift Ctrl Alt while I clicked on "Edit" in the Photoshop Elements 6 Welcome Screen AND then answering Yes to the question.
The big however is that, if you dare use the Effects Panel, you are back to the original problem, namely the Effects and not the selections responding to the Up Arrow.
Hopefully I will figure this out in the next few hours unless someone has a more immediate answer.

Your question on Gold Text is going to be buried in this thread which is addressing a specific problem with a restoration technique.
The web site for Photoshop User TV is
http://www.photoshopusertv.com.
The last time that I looked there was an index of episodes. Check it out. If I come across anything related to your topic, I will start a new post on the topic of Gold Text.

If I read your last post correctly, what you are looking for should be in the Subscriber Section of
http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com
You need to be a paid subscriber to view these videos there. Check out the details at that website. Photoshop User TV is an entirely different web site and enterprise, with a Photoshop (not Photoshop Elements) focus.

Elaine,
At this point, the only way that I can consistently get the selection to move (and not the Effect Palette components) with the Up Arrow is to:
1. Rebuild the Preferences as indicated
2. Do not go near the Effects Palette or use before doing the tutorial
3. And, work through the tutorial as shown using the Up Arrow Key to move the selection.
I have found the following searching the Internet
http://blog.hummiesworld.com/2007/10/bugs-and-complaints-of-photoshop.html
Check out the section on "Nudging the arrow keys does not always work". You have probably seen that before. That suggested Control T business does not solve the problem for me.

I gave up with the up arrow on moving the first selection. I didn't want to change my preferences so found that if I added a new layer with the selection (I did have to choose a different tool) then I could move the blank selection instead of moving the selection. Then I could go from there, make copies and do the "fix". I just hope I can remember what I did when I need to use this technique. I am giving myself a headache. Let me know if you come up with anything else.

Elaine,
OK, let us say that, in a given project, you encountered this problem and could not move that selection as described.
1. Do you remember if you had used the Effects Panel in this specific project prior to beginning the restoration tutorial in it?
2. If you found yourself in this mess, could you close Photoshop Elements 6, reopen it, not go near the Effects Panel, and then everything would work as advertised in that tutorial? (This is without having to rebuilt the Preferences somewhere along the line.)
After this post, I think I will retire this issue and stick with my good old reliable Clone Stamp Tool.

ATR, THAT WAS IT!!!! There was no need to use effects in that tutorial, but I had probably used it after I opened elements for something else. When I closed Elements and reopened the first thing I tried was the tutorial and had no problem with the arrow keys!!! Yea! We found the answer. Thank you so much for helping me (and others) to work through this problem. Don't know why it happens but as long as we know it is an easy fix.

Interesting discussion. I have run into the bug but because I keep my Effects Palette floating free (and not returning to the Palette Bin when closed - in fact I keep my Palette Bin closed all the time as it has nothing in it) all I have to do is close Effects and selection moving then works as it should. It was a little aggravating at first but as I have Grants Tools installed that has Transform Selection I usually use that as not only will that let you move the selection around you can also adjust the shape of the selection by free transforming it.

Elaine,
Thanks for the update. You may find my comments to Tony interesting.
Tony,
Yesterday when I was looking for workarounds to this specific issue, I tried moving the palettes around as well as out the palette bin. I went into Window Menu to uncheck Effects and tried every which way to "exterminate it". Did not work. The only fix was as stated previously. After your post today, I got the idea to try this in Photoshop Elements 3 which I still have installed. True, it does not have the Quick Selection Tool, but it has the Selection Brush. But, yesterday this issue was occurring in Photoshop Element 6 with both the selections from the Quick Selection and Selection Brush Tools. Guess what, essentially no similar problem in Photoshop Elements 3. What does this tell out????????????? Can we implicate the addition of the Quick Selection Tool which appeared in this latest version as a major advance in selections???? There were more observations that were interesting, but for now "I will think about that tomorrow" as someone once said.

ATR: You're right - my fix doesn't work with the Quick Selection Brush (I was doing it with the marquee tool as I hadn't read the whole thread - so forget what I said :o). It's odd - you can move it with the mouse but not the arrow keys but transform selection does work and let you use the arrow keys to move the selection around. I'm going to have to watch that PhotoshopTV episode :)

arabma,
This is my understanding of the present situation. Photoshop Elements Techniques Newsletter was recently taken over by another company and is continuing under this new management. Many of the old staff, including Corey Barker, have gone on to other assignments.
But, in a recent thread it said that Corey Barker will continue to issue his Photoshop Elements Killer Tips BUT not as frequently. So, check out the download sites for this podcast:
1. iTunes free subscription
2. The download link in at Elements Village, under Learn More, Elements Killer Tips
or
3. The download link in the Subscriber Area page at http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com.
Last I read, there should be another episode in a week or so.

Charles,
Did you see my post #31 in this thread.
It is my understanding that the current situation was impacted by Photoshop Elements Techniques newsletter being sold and many of the old staff people being reassigned to Photoshop enterprises still in the holdings of Scott Kelby et al.

Since the sale of the newsletter, Corey (and Matt and Dave) are hard at work doing stuff for NAPP; they're no longer employees here at Photoshop Elements Techniques. They will continue to do tutorials for the newsletter and the site, but Corey won't continue to do the Elements podcasts with the same frequency. He's a busy guy! :)
That said, there should be a new video up from Corey next week.
