Asdal, duplicate the layer (Layer>Duplicate Layer), make your selection on the new top layer. If your selection is what you want to keep, then go to Select>Inverse so the selection will switch to what you want to get rid of, and then just hit the delete key.

It looks like nothing happened because the bottom layer still has the full image and it is showin up thru the new transparent layer you just created. Just click the bottom layer's "eye" next to the thumbnail to turn the visibility of the bottom layer off, and see just the top layer.

As an alternative to duplicating the layer, make sure you are working on a copy of your image, and then just doubleclick the Background Layer's name, rename it or just click to accept the default, and then do your selection/deletion as mentioned above.

By doubleclicking the Background Layer and renaming it, you are making it editable and thus you can delete the background to make it transparent. If you try to do it on the original Background Layer, you will get white instead of transparent.
