With all the new members we have had lately it may be time to post some of our old Tutorials again. I love the orton effect so decided to share that for all the new friends.
Orton effect gives a soft alomst dreamy effect to the photo.
1. Duplicate your image twice (Ctrl J)
2. Change the top layers blend mode to screen.
3. Merge your screen layer down. (Ctrl E)
4. Duplicate your new image. (Ctrl J)
5. On your new top layer go to filters, Blur, Gas Blur. Use enough blur that the shapes are still visible but the details are gone. Don't be afraid to Blur.
6. Now change the blend mode on theat layer to multiply.
Done
I have no idea who to credit for this tutoial. It is something that I picked up here a year or so ago and I have had lots of fun with this technique.

IN reading through the threads I see that several people are trying the orton effect. I am gald that I decided to dig that out and share it . I will try to dig out something different and post again for those who are new and have not had the fun of doing some of the different tuts that our friends here have posted. Do we have a tut thread here, I wll have to loon and if we do those tuts are there already.

Tina,
I saw this tut some time ago on: http://pcin.net/update/2006/11/01/the-orton-effect-digital-photography-tip-of-the-week/ but struggled a bit with it. Your version is so much simpler - thanks.
I now realise that the picture I chose originally wasn't best suited for the Orton effect; it seems some are better than others. However, I think this one turned out alright:http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1WXd0s1hqJfIzRSpJ7RpCT48L8zhAj0_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1WXd0s1hqJfIzRSpJ7RpCT48L8zhAj0)

I think you'll find it was Kimi in Creative Homework #13 (http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22443&highlight=orton+effect). It really is a wonderful effect and worth reposting.

Tina, thanks for this tut. I had seen this effect before, but had never tried it.
I struggled a bit with the Gaussian Blur (not too sure how much to blur), although I kept saying to myself: "shapes still visible, details gone." Anyway here's my attempt.

Sepiana - excellent!!
Chuck, thanks. I do appreciate your comment. It's encouraging to learn that my 1st attempt at the Orton effect wasn't a failure. As you can tell by now, I'm always trying some new technique; some I win, some I lose; but that's what the fun is all about -- being challenged and facing it.

Another great orton photo. This one looks like it should hang over the couch. A keeper for sure . you made a good choice for the effect.
