Hi can anyone help,my Grandson was recently pictured in our local paper, and he wanted me to scan the picture and print him a copy.
Having scanned the image into elements 6 I used the quick fix (as I'm still very much a novice with this software) the result was very grainy and and the underside of the paper was seen coming through.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi there and welcome to the forum. Scanning newspaper clippings is always a problem and there's not much you can do to improve it. Have you thought of asking the local paper for a copy? I know our local papers keep their pics around and are happy to supply them - sometimes for a small fee - and the quality is much better than the printed version.

Hi Tony
Thanks for your reply, unfortunatley the picture wasn't taken by any of their photographers and they were unsure who had taken the picture so were unable to help us. Oh well I'm afraid my Grandson will just have to make do with the paper cutting.
Kind regards
Jackie

Most scanner software comes with the option to "descreen" which eliminates the dots you see in the newspaper photos. Try this and see if improves your scan.

Hello Frank, and thank you for your suggestion to use descreen which has made the photo much cleaner and printable. So thank you for your help it's much appreciated, it's made me realise I have much to learn.
Kind regards

...the picture wasn't taken by any of their photographers and they were unsure who had taken the picture...So this image from an unknown source somehow made its way into the newspaper office. The newspaper decided that they'd publish the image without knowing the source. (without knowing the source, is it possible for them to have gotten the rights to publish it?) The newspaper, after publishing the image, no longer has a copy. Smells fishy to me!

I suspect they just made up an excuse so they wouldn't have to do a bit of work.

I suppose there is no on-line edition of that paper??

Jackie, have you checked to see if the newspaper published the article on-line? You can simply print it out and probably w/picture evan at web resolution if you don't enlarge it.

To all those who have taken the trouble to reply I have managed to print a half decent picture after help from Frank. However just to clear things up the picture in question, was of my Grandson and teamates winning a local cricket competition and we think that a spectator took the photo and then handed it in to our local free paper I have checked online issues as far as I can and was unable to find the picture maybe this was because the cricket match was some several weeks earlier.
Goodness this was a long winded "quick" reply.
Kind regards to all

Sometimes I use a black sheet of paper behind the newspaper to help eliminate the show-through of the back side. The normal white of the scanner lid usually causes the show-through to be too intense. The descreening suggested above helps. Sometimes scanning larger than 100% and at higher res than you want to finish with will help the sharpness. Just reduce size after correcting with PSE.

Hi Jim,thanks for the above tip I will certainly give this a try. I am also writing down all the suggestions I have been give so that if I have need of them again I will know what to do. Can I just add that I think this site is great for someone like me who is relatively new to photography everyone is so helpful. Thanks again Jackie
