OK-I've tried it all! I have a laptop and I'm trying to do the copyright symbol. I've tried alt-0-1-6-9 and function-0-1-6-9 and alt-fn-0-1-6-9 and control-0-1-6-9. the best I can get is an asterisk. How can I do this???

Teachfla, first, make sure you use the Number Keppad, not the number key across the top. On my Dell laptop, the "simulated" number key pad is etched on the keys in the middle of the keyboard (7,8,9,U,I,O,P,J,K,L, and M), activated with the FN key held down.
If your laptop doesn't have such a simulated keypad you may be out of luck. You'll have to use the Shape Tool in PSE to get the symbol.

If you still can't access the © from your keyboard then there is a work around as Elements supplies one. You will find it in "Custom Shape Tools" ( keyboard short cut is "U") and then go to the fly out menu and select "Shapes"

...and if all else fails, go to Windows Character Map, copy the sign and paste it into your text.

And there is also the possibility that the font you are using doesn't have the symbol. Try something like Ariel, but if I get stuck, like Juergen says I always go to the Windows Character Map, because ther you can see all the odd symbols that the font has.

Two and a half year away from a PC ... how quickly I forget the obvious solution.
:o
⌥+ g = ©

Grant,
Maybe you should emulate Windows on your Mac every once a while, just for old times' sake... :D

The most embarrassing thing is that I offer volunteer tech support, in the community, for both Mac and PC and still forgot that one.

I finally got it figured out from the Toshiba website, with a prod from Jeff about the numeric keypad on the laptop. It's fn and F11 then alt-0-1-6-9. An awful lot for one little symbol, but oh well!
