Does anyone else have a hard time seeing the toolbars etc. in the editor due to lack of contrast between the background color and the icons and labels etc.?

It is tough for some, while others either like it or have gotten used to it. I'm mostly with you--I favor the lighter interface of earlier versions. Not a deal-breaker for me, but in a perfect world, I'll take lighter.

I have no problems with it. With my bad vision, working with glasses or contacts, the background is a welcome relief to enable me to see my images better. I work with either no room light or lights dimmed very low when I am editing, and I believe most serious photoshop individuals do the same. I am not so concerned with menu contrast as it is pretty standard. As well, most of the things I need to do within PSE6 I use the keyboard shortcuts to help me get around. Secondly, nicely compliments LR, which has a similar background, so nice transition is greatly appreciated here. I give the new background two thumbs up.

If you are using an LCD or laptop screen, then try angling/tilting it a little differently. I find that some angles help me to see the contrast much better. This is one of the problems with LCDs and one reason why most pro photographers/graphic designers have stuck with their older CRT monitors.

Based on the dozens of forum posts about this topic, the readability of PSE 6 varies greatly among users and displays. Some people have been able to make significant improvements by adjusting brightness and contrast, either manually or using a calibrator like the Spyder. See this message for details:
