I am relatively new to Elements, but not to photography. I have boxes of slides in various states of deteriation:(. Many of them are simply faded, some have a visible molted look. I assume that I can 'fix' many of them in Elements 5, but not certain where to start after the initial digitizing. Any advice for an OLD:rolleyes: newcommer?
TIA

Actually you might find that your scanner (particularly if it's an Epson) will do a lot of fixing for you as you do the scan. Even if it doesn't have the Digital ICE technology (which is great for fixing old photos) it will still offer to remove dust/scratches and fix the color.
Once scanned in then you'll need to figure out what exactly the problem is with the photo. Likely problems will be color casts (often yellowing) which you can fix using the Enhance, Adjust Color, Remove Color Cast; over/under exposure by using the Levels adjustment; dust/scratches which you can fix using the Filters, Noise, Dust & Scratches or clone tools.
I suggest trying the Guided Edit and working through the fixes in order to see how it turns out.
One last thing, make sure you scan the images at a large enough resolution for what you want to do with them. You don't want to go through all that fixing to find out you didn't scan them big enough to print in the size you want.
