Dave Cross has a new video in the Subscribers Area.
It's called Gridphotos. Quite a nice technique.

Loved the tut. Now I have a couple of questions:
1. He said he could divide it up into smaller segments, but didn't say how. Does anyone know?
2. Could the individual segments be filled with something else? ...another picture? ...a "scrapbooking" element?
Guess I could just play with it and find out, so maybe my questions are rhetorical. But I have to go make a huge pasta salad for a surprise birthday party this afternoon, so can't take time to play at the moment.

Pasta salad can wait!
I tried to follow (using PSE 5), and the first thing I was not allowed to do was simplify the layer...that option was grayed out.
Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?

Okay, I answered my own question about filling in one section with a different photo...No PROBLEM! Here (http://www.elementsvillage.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=5581&c=2)is my experiment. However, I wasn't able to figure out how to make the grid have more sections. I tried dividing my canvas into 4 equal sections, then constraining the grid to 1/4 the size of the canvas, then duplicating the layer 3 times and moving each copy to a different quadrant. That didn't work. So if there's a simple way to increase the number of sections on a grid, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks,
Shar

Hi Shar ...
What makes this method simple is the use of the custom shape ... you could subdivide each of the sections using the same custom shape.
Or you can do it manually using the rectangular marquee but that takes quite a lot more time to do ..

Duh. I knew there had to be a simple way to do it....SUB divide each division. :) Thank you. I also discovered that there must be some differences in the way to do this with PSE 5. When I dragged the grid across the photo as Dave directed, everything but the grid disappeared, and the grid was not a plain color, but what was left of the photo. And there was no way to simplify the layer as Dave instructed. Maybe I've got a basic misunderstanding of his instructions, but I finally made it work: Here are the steps I had to take: Start with a NEW FILE. Drag the photo onto the new canvas. Click on the Background layer and LAYER FROM BACKGROUND. With Layer 0 selected, drag the cookie cutter grid across the photo. Then go through the steps: Select Grid Layer > Magic Wand a section > Photo > CTRL J repeating until all sections are duplicated. Hide the original photo. Delete the grid layer. Make a new background layer and fill with desired color. Tweak the photos and add strokes as desired. (I hope I got all that right!) Anyway, it is addictive, and here is my second example (oops...world/link not working again!): http://www.elementsvillage.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=5582&c=2 Shar, who MUST go make the salad now! :O

I hate it that sometimes when I post a reply, the format is just as I type it, with spaces between paragraphs, and sometimes it all runs together as above. I made that posting nice and neat with each step on a separate line, but when it shows up, it's all smooshed together, making it very difficult to read. If anyone knows how I can do something to keep this from happening, I'd love to hear from you. Shar

I'd just go edit and delete all those instructions I wrote out, but it will help others feel less embarrassed about making fools of themselves if I just leave it there and correct myself, as I did on another thread. All those instructions I wrote out above were how to do the grid using the COOKIE CUTTER tool, which I selected by mistake, instead of the CUSTOM SHAPE tool. It works perfectly, as Dave instructed using the proper tool. 20 lashes with a wet noodle for red-faced me! Shar

Kev,
Thanks for the tip re the photo grid video. Very interesting technique, with a lot of possibilities. I've just used it on an image I submitted to the EZ Challenge #8.
