Which layer do you apply the palette knife filter to - the new top layer or the middle one?

Bayla,
I read it as being applied to the new top layer and I think the picture in the tut looks like that is what the person does,

Lisa,
That's what I thought....it just didn't seem to do much to the picture I was working on. I've tried two images so far and haven't been happy with either.:(

Bayla, sorry you are having problems but I'm glad to know it isn't only me. I just put pic #3 in the trash. It is really hard to find the right pic for this tut. I guess that is part of the growth curve in the learning process so it is a good thing!!

Hi Bayla and Mary Lou,
Can I join you two? I'm having the same problem. I went through 3 pictures which all ended up in the Recycle Bin. When I'm done, they just don't look right.

I did five before I got one that I considered 'passable'. I'm going to try again over the weekend and see what I can come up with.

Try different blend modes on the palette knife layer and see what it does. Overlay did practically nothing to mine but the darkening blend modes were neat.

I found a pic with a lot of color and it looked better so I posted it. I'll try more over the weekend.
Fish, I like yours. Looks like France or Italy or ??

Sometimes it can be really frustrating to find an image that works well with the technique you are using! This time I was lucky and the first one I tried worked pretty well. I did palette knife on the top (background duplicate) layer and used the color burn blend mode.
Jo, the frog looks great.
Fish, yours really did turn out nice, too.
Kim, I like the way your vase of flowers turned out.
Thanks, Lisa, for another fun tutorial. I want to try more with this.

Once again, you picked a great tuturial, Lisa - this was way too much fun! I love all of the results - they all are so different and unique. I think I especially like the ones with the brighter colors. Great job everyone!

Bill...... what is your photo of? I can't quite make it out. It appears to be something consisting of... gee... what is that.... tires? And maybe metal? hmmm.... I think I can make out... no... yes... yes.. it appears to be a hood of some sort. Oh! I know what it is now! A car! By golly! It's a car, isn't it? Well! Who would have thought!
Well done!

:D yes, it looks like perseverance is definitely required for this week's 'challenge' ... and it is paying off in fantastic results .....
Jo - a lovely 'prince', the effect looks almost like glass mosaic in places
Toni - a very pretty picture with lovely colours, it's good to have colour this week after bleaching last week
Larry - beautiful result, they look like silk, I know what you mean about 'cleaner look', I found I still had too many or too strong squares in mine, but tweaked only a little,
Seachelle - that has turned out lovely, beautiful tones and a softness too.
Fish - I am so glad you stuck with it to find the 'right' picture, that is stunning!
Kim - very soothing and pretty flowers .... and from Bill hey ;)
Julie - a lovely bold, painted look, the multiply blend mode looks great on the image.
Mary Lou - have you developed an orb addiction?? (only joking),
A nice result on your second picture, but I wasn't altogether sure what it was, because I looked at the shrub and thought it looked like a giant squirrel and I swear I have only had tea this morning (hic :D).
Martha - I love magnolia shots and this one is very pretty, lovely richness to the tones.
Tammy - love the experimentation you did, great result. It's great when everyone starts with the instruction of the tut then does their own thing to create something more.
Bill - it was your picture that reminded me of what the technique reminds me of (make sense?) and that is when you used to do colouring with felt tips and pause for a moment and end up with a darker dot on the page, it looks like felt tip coloured. Very nice. Did you have colouring books with cars? I had colouring books but not with cars in.
Thanks everyone (and I've used up my smilie quota)

Is is just me or is anyone else having problems opening that tutorial. Had the same problem last week. And it's happening again today - I get an Internal Server Error with both IE7 and Firefox.

Tony,
It's not just you. I had the same problems plus I kept on getting a pop-up that wouldn't go away! Was going to try Firefox after it happened with IE7, but if you had trouble with that one as well......

Lisa, yes I have definately developed a lot of addictions since my arrival at the Village!! You are absolutely right, it is a squirrel topiary. I took that pic many moons ago and never knew what to do with it. Your tut was the perfect place for it!! Here's the original.

Pete - a car! :) looks great!
Tony - I really really like this! It is a must see at full size though, the colours are beautiful and it looks like a mosaic of pieces of glass, and you managed to get rid of all those little dots from one of the filters (which were annoying me in mine and just got darker with multiply).
Clara - a beautiful house and it looks great with this technique.
Sepiana - a fun, novel idea, lovely.
Your second image I like a lot, is it a photo of a tile or similar decoration?
Es - gosh, those are very dramatic results!
Suzanne - a lovely fun image.
Bayla - lovely results, I especially like the dahlia, very soft and dreamy.
Kim - that's beautiful, an ethereal quality, and must be what we'd both been doing when we looked at Mary Lou's picture and thought, 'Oh, it's a giant squirrel!' :D
Sharon - that looks fun!
Eleanor - flowers do look pretty in this style.
Martha - on mine the dots annoyed me, but I like how they turned out on your fruit.
Shar - both are great, and it's a lovely card.
Christell - you have a gift for creating a mystical look, it's lovely.
Thanks everyone, please pass by tomorrow for a new challenge :)

Lisa: Thanks again for taking the time to comment as usual. I do remember seeing those dots but in my case I think multiplying the find edges layer got rid of them and strengthened the effect. I was working from your text tutorial as I had problems getting onto the site (thanks for sending it) so maybe had the advantage of not seeing what I was supposed to be getting and although I basically stuck to the tutorial except for the multiply step I did find I had to tweak the filter settings a bit as I think they are image size dependent (I was working with a big image). I didn't like my result at first but showed a before and after to my camera club (as an example of what you can do with Elements) and they liked it so I guess I now like it too :D

Lisa,
Thanks once again for takng the time to comment on everyone's efforts!
I hink that this technique works best if you start off with an image wih very strong colours - when I tried it on something more subtle it wasn't nearly as effective.
I so look forward to Thursdays....Be Creative and my favourite digital scrapbooking site (http://www.designerdigitals.com/) has a sale with 30% off each week!

Terri... Very swank! Love it. Very cool art deco look. You should make up a set of cards -- perfect thank-yous (assuming the photo is you...if not, perfect for whoever the model is). Shar

Yeah. The photo is me. Thanks for the comment. I can hardly wait to try more clallenges. I was going to start a gallery here, but I viewed the video tutorial and saw the ten meg file limit and decided against it. I think between my .mac account and flickr I should be able to display my work adequately.

Your second image I like a lot, is it a photo of a tile or similar decoration?
Lisa,
Thanks for the nice comments.
Yes, it's a photo of an Arts & Crafts tile I bought a few years ago at the Van Briggle Pottery in Colorado Springs.
Here is the original image.
