Val, great picture. I love the frame. Care to share how you did it?

Hi, Mary Lou.

I made a selection around the cropped picture. There are many ways to accomplish the next step, but what i did was expand the canvas by using the crop tool to select the entire photo. Hold down the ALT key and drag one of the center handles OUT (holding ALT resizes both side at the same time. Repeat for the other side (in other words, you have to do horizontal and vertical. When you confirm, you now have a canvas that's larger than the picture.

Add a new layer. Drag below the picture. Sample a color from the photo, fill that new layer with the color. That makes your mat.

Repeat as many times as you like. Of course, with each repeat, use the crop.enlarge on the largest layer (not back on the original photo).

To get the bevel on the "frame", I selected that very first choice in Bevels and modified the layer style by dragging the bevel size slider to the right until it looked about right (very scientific approach :)).

Have fun!

A very great start to the Challenge, everyone!

Bill! That is hilarious! :D Second-guessing your photo choices? I guess I should be grateful that all you did was bust through my posted images running and screaming when I hosted this challenge. My little avatar could have suffered a far worse humiliation! :o

Very ingenious take!!!

There are some fun ideas so far.

Val - That looks really nice. Good crop selection and an interesting colorful frame.

Sharon - The mirror image plays up the shapes really well!

Toni - That's great ... it really captures the feel of the place!

Chelle - That's quite fun. I especially like the colorful clothing against the grayscale background.

Steven - It looks like another right one too.

Keep them coming in folks.

Kim - I agree, every wrangler needs choices. That's a fun entry and as always your masking is spot on.

A little quiet this week on the cropping challenge, there is still time left to have a boot kicking good time!

Mary Lou - That's really a clever approach!

Pete - The OOB works perfectly on it. Very well done.
