Numbering picture files

I know there is a way to do this but I am stumped. I have a folder with many pictures of a vacation. I numbered them so they would be in order. Then I decided to insert some other pictures but now my numbering is all out of sorts. Is there a way to automatically renumber everything. Thanks for your help.

The way I do it (so they come out in the right order on a digital photo frame) is to put them into a Collection (or in PSE6 an Album) in the Organizer, rearrange them so they are in the order I want and then export as new files using the renaming option. That lets you number them in sequence. I don't know of a way just to rename the files in order but I guess you could add an a, b, c onto the inserted ones and see if that works. One of the problems is that different programs interpret numbers differently and it's sometimes hard to get files to show up in the order you want.

Thanks for your help Tony. I've got them in a collection now, I know this sounds stupid, but how do I rearrange them in the order I want?

Ther are no stupid questions here :). You can drag the thumbnails around with the mouse and they'll change order. The little numbers on the corner of the thumbnails will change when you move them around. When you export as a new file they will export in the new order.

Once you've got the pictures properly ordered in a collection (PSE 5) / album (PSE 6), you can select them and do File > Rename to rename them in place, without having to export them and reimport them. This will give them names of the form p-1.jpg, p-2.jpg, p-3.jpg, etc.

I tried to export them in a new folder on my desktop and they were all out of order. What I really want to do is burn them to a disc. Is there a way to do it from my PSE collection? Thank for all your help

If you use Johns renaming method (thanks John - I didn't know you could do that) you can then just select all and burn to a disc. In PSE6 it's File>Make a CD/DVD but in PSE5 I think it was File>Copy/Move to a Removeable Disc or words to that effect.

John, I must be doing something wrong. I have PSE 5. I selected them and went to file but didn't see any place to rename them?

After selecting the desired photos in the Organizer, go to the File menu and select Rename. This is described in more detail on page 110 of the User Guide; let me know if you still can't see the Rename command on the File menu.
