Hi,

I just wanted to let folks know that the Elements Techniques subscriber site (www.photoshopelementsuser.com) will be down for a while tomorrow afternoon, June 12. We'll be moving it over to our own Web servers, which means that there will be a period of time when we're checking the links, making sure the database is running properly, and doing a whole bunch of other things that our Web wizards (Jon and Cindy) won't tell me about, probably because they don't want me to worry unnecessarily.

ElementsVillage isn't moving servers, so the forums should be up all day.

Now, back to editing v5n3 ... :)

best,
Rick

Just to clarify, the /subscriber and /gallery sections will be road blocked. Everything else should remain up. Once Cindy and I go through all the steps we're not telling Rick, the servers will switch over and everyone will have some new stuff to play with.

If you see anything funny, drop me a PM. I'm hoping it will be pretty seamless.

Rick and Jon,

Thank for letting us know about this. We do appreciate all the hard work you folks do here.

I don't believe we have met Cindy have we? If so, I missed that thread.

I have a question, perhaps premature. Will the subscription site still have the same URL or will it have a new URL?

jonknee

Everything will stay in the same place or have permanent redirects in place. The subscriber site itself is staying at the same address, but there will be a new area at another address.

Tomorrow if you think something is missing, please let me know and I'll track it down (I'm playing both sides of this, so I can view both sites at the same time). But we're shooting for all URLs to be compatible.

A new area... hmmmmm what could it be? <smyle>

Just so folks won't be disappointed - most of the changes are 'behind the scenes' - we've had to do a lot of back-end work to get things a bit more modern.

We do plan to update the site with better tools and help later this year, but this first step was just to get everything moved over properly.

And we're back up. First ones to notice the changes get a prize (not really, unless you count satisfaction). It may take a few minutes for your ISP to pick up on the changes, but you should see the transfered (non-road blocked) site momentarily.

If you have any trouble logging in, please first try to recover your login. We did a little house cleaning and the web users table is now very accurate--which should help cut down on people wondering why they didn't know they were expired. I'll leave out the technical details, but there were a small number of users that may need to recover their login. The up side is your account details are now completely synced and there should be a lot fewer mix ups for everyone around.

Also, if you see anything funky, please PM me about it. I've gone to great lengths (my new software is up to revision 80) to make things seamless, but I'm sure a few things slipped through.

Once again you are a master at what you do! Thanks so much for your countless hours of work to make this a smooth, trouble free transition.

Is it back up and running yet? I can get onto the home page but just get an error message if I try to go to the subscriber area or the gallery.

I checked with Jon because I had the same problem. You need to delete your bookmark and retype the web address and you will then go to the new server.

I tried it and it worked for me. I'm in the subscriber area now.

Deleting the bookmark won't do anything, but closing your browser and opening it again might. Browsers keep a cache of where sites are, so restarting it can help make it ask your ISP where a site is. Since our location changed, it's important for your computer to ask again.

An easy way to tell what site you are on is looking at the footer, it will say Photo One Media. Also if you see the downtime message you're definitely on the old site.

I closed the browser and reopened it and the bookmark still took me to the old site. That's why I suggested deleting it.

Thank you Jon,
I kept getting the error messages so I closed my browser and reopened it and the site is working wonderfully. Very nice.

Hmm, it may be tied to the cache, but I hadn't heard that before. Dealing with DNS is sort of an art form. Photo One's offices in Portland aren't yet seeing the new server. My connection is a bit more ambitious and jumped in early.

We're still seeing the old site here on the West Coast; it definitely takes time for that ol' Internet to catch up with itself sometimes...

(It does show up when I go to the site on my iPhone, though, so I know it's out there. :))

Thanks again to Jon and Cindy, though - this wasn't a trivial job.

Thanks for the suggestions Nancy and Jon.

Well, I've deleted the bookmark, closed my browser, reopened it and I'm still getting nowhere.:(

I'm going to close down the computer now and go to bed. Maybe when I reboot in the morning I'll no longer have problems....watch this space.....

Looks like you may be one of the few people I mentioned who got lost in the shuffle. Try recovering your login and if that doesn't work PM me and I'll get you set up. I apologize about the trouble--there was no seamless way to do it correctly and since we had already gone through all the trouble of writing a new CRM system we definitely wanted to do it right.

Seems to be working fine - actually my subscription had just expired and I'd forgotten to renew and I'd forgotten my password but it did let me know in a friendly manner, sent me a new password, and took my money so I'm now all paid up again :D

Also thought I should mention if you can't get in, try using your email address as your username. That seems to be a common theme.

You can change your username (click Profile) after you log-in as well, so you can make it whatever it used to be. The rest of the information in your profile is what is used to send the newsletter, so it would be a good idea to give it a quick once-over as well.

Hi everyone,

Today I tried to update My PET Gallery (the first time since the site was down). I keep getting warnings such as: Failed to open stream, Permission denied, Unable to move, Error 1.

Anyone else having the same problem?
