I am a former high school art teacher, who taught traditional black and white film based photography with a real darkroom. I am currently very happily retired. My big passion right now is my new iMac which I bought a little over a month ago.
My experience with Photoshop has primarily been with the full version, although I have owned a few Elements versions along the way. Having recently switched platforms from PC to Mac I find myself without Photoshop. Since I no longer have my academic credentials to purchase a full version at a reasonable price I am unlikely to get it any time soon, which accounts for my joining this forum so I can get a feel for whether Elements will meet my needs in retirement. It probably will.
I still have some PC machines in the house, so I still have access to Photoshop, and will continue to use it for awhile.
I am considering switching to Elements because it is cheaper. I realize that I could request some disks for my current version to accommodate my platform switch, but I understand that only the CS3 version is a Cocoa version. I also have no intention of removing my PC installations, and don't want to lie about doing so to get Mac disks.
I have not downloaded the trial version of Elements 6 because I don't have the time right now to give the trial justice, and there is also a notice on the Adobe web site that trials are unavailable until some future date, probably due to web site updates or some such thing.
I look forward to reading the posts on the web site here.
I was wondering if one of the Mac users here might be able to tell me if Elements 6 is Carbonized to run under Rosetta, or if it is a real Cocoa program.
Thanks in advance.
Terri

Have you looked at asking Adobe of they will do a platform switch disk for you ??

Wendy,
The problem with that, which I mentioned in my initial post, is that I do not intend to remove the software from my PC computers, which I believe one is legally required to promise to do to qualify for the replacement disks. The other reason is that any version for which I would qualify for a platform switch would not be a Cocoa program, so it would run slowly. At the present time I am better off running Photoshop at full speed on a PC and transferring the files to my Mac than running a really slow version of Photoshop on my Mac. I am likely to purchase Elements sometime in the next couple of months, and maybe even go for the purchase of Premier Elements at the same time to save some money.

Months just turned into hours...
I gave in and bought Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac.
I ended up checking for a Missing Manual for Photoshop Elements 6 on Amazon. I found one, and it had good reviews, so I decided to get it. Then I remembered that Amazon carries software and often has a better price on it than you can get from Adobe. When I searched for the software and was offered a “better together” deal that bundled the book I was interested with the software, I couldn’t help myself. I took the supersaver shipping, so I should see it the package arriving in five to seven days.
I knew I was going to buy it eventually anyway, and I was tired of doing all of my image editing on the PC.
I can hardly wait for this package to arrive.

The package arrived today. I installed Elements 6 on my Mac. I got a little worried that the install had stalled out because it looked like it wasn't moving for quite a while when it was nearly complete. But it finally finished.
I am really enjoying the book Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac from the Missing Manual series. I have four books from the series so far, and each one is excellent. This book reads very easily just like the others.
Inside the Elements package there was a flyer for a program called Essentials 2, which I think I might buy. I am especially interested in the Enlarge It feature of that program since I have many very low resolution photographs from 1998 when I bought my first digital camera, which took as many as 30 photographs on a 3.5 inch floppy disk. You can imagine how small they are. If Enlarge It can enhance them enough to let them work well in a slide show I will be pleased.
There was also a flyer included for the Elements Techniques magazine. I had actually been a charter subscriber years ago, but I think I got rid of the old issues when I switched entirely to Photoshop.
I guess it just goes to show you that you never know what will be useful again. I did notice that the pdf files are available for purchase on the web site for the magazine. But I think I will just start with a fresh subscription, primarily to qualify for the members only content on the web site.
I am excited now. This is going to keep me busy for a very very long time.
I'm going to learn as much as I can about Elements one step at a time.

Yes Yes Yes to the Techniques newsletter. The subscriber content alone is worth the price...well over 200 video tutorials, countless written tuts, you will have to retire from retirement to enjoy it all...
