When I came home this evening the girl across the street ran over to point out a fawn curled up in my front yard. I guess there are advantages to not having mowed the lawn last weekend. It felt safe and comfy, but when my neighbor and I approached to decide whether it was OK (and to take a few photos) it stood up and ran into the woods uphill.

Hi Jo,

Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful! You did capture the moment!

You've inspired me to try to do something like that. We have about 7-13 deer roaming around our property, which we affectionately call "Deer's Favorite Buffet". Next time they show up, I'll be waiting with my camera ready.

Thanks, girls.

My "shooting style" is definitely not plan-sit-wait. It's capture the surprise of the moment. Of course that means having the right lens on the camera and having the camera ready to grab.

This was taken at 300 mm so I didn't have to get so close that I scared it off. But my neighbor and I kind of came from 2 angles and that probably spooked it.

Funny thing, though. I went in the house and ate some supper and when I walked by the front window it had returned and was just settling down again -- a little closer to my house this time. It's so small that at first glance I thought it was a squirrel. To give it a little perspective, in this shot the base of my maple tree is behind it.

Haven't seen it today, though. I hope it's mamma found it and took it safely "home" -- and that the coyotes didn't find it first.
