Football Card template question???

Hey,
I run a free website in Florida that helps high school kids get in to college by creating video highlights. This year I will be creating high school football cards for these players and just bought the photoshop 6.0. Not trying to do anything fancy but I am having problems doing simple things like adding a shape. Also, I added a logo to the card and instead of just the logo, it included the white background of the logo.

I have been working with it all morning and have figured out quite a bit but just wonder what I am doing wrong to not be able to add a simple star shape and then add text within that shape....

Also are there any existing templates that can be bought or anything like that??

Any help would be appreciated.

Derek,
To get a star shape, access the Shape Selection tool, then from that the Custom Shape tool, then from the drop down list the Shapes library where you will find a star shape, among others.
Open a blank document ( I elected white here), then drag out the star shape.
Using the text tool, type your text, and move it using the move tool.
I used my copyright logo, which is configured as a brush, and incorporated in my brush library.
Be sure to have the layers palette open so thatyou can see what you are doing. The print screen depiction should assist you.

Hi, Derek. Welcome! If the logo you are trying to add is on a background, you have to extract it before you add to your card template. Do so with one of the selection tools (lasso, magnetic lasso, etc.) and when the item is isolated with "marching ants" you should be able to use your move tool to drag it to your template image.

You can also try selecting the white background with the magic wand tool and deleting it.
