Be Creative Week #30

This week’s tut may require some 'creative interpretation' :D but you’re more than up to it …….. there are some interesting stages along the way ......

http://www.adobenerds.com/Photoshop:-Create-Sketch-effect._40.html (http://www.adobenerds.com/Photoshop:-Create-Sketch-effect._40.html)

Notes:

In PSE Invert is under filter>adjustments or Ctrl I

Your layer turns white when you switch to colour dodge.
Applying Gaussian blur to that layer – you’ll need to experiment with how much blur, (I used over 30 on mine).

Please try it out, have fun, and as always I look forward to seeing your images. :)

here's mine to get us started ....

I lowered the opacity on the luminosity layer just a touch.

Here's a first attempt. I lowered the luminosity layer to about 50%, duplicated the black and white sketch layer a couple of times with the blend mode set to multiply to enhance the edges and tweaked the contrast and hue/saturation. Going to have to play some more - I like sketch effects.

This was fun....I think I need to find an image without such a strong background and try again...

http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1c2FWwdPhWkI50UT0IQtAQ6mTLPaD_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1c2FWwdPhWkI50UT0IQtAQ6mTLPaD)

(Edit)

OK, I replaced the background with some trees and tried again. Following Tony's advice, I played with both the Brightness/Contrast (on the color layer) AND Levels (on the desat/invert layer) to bring out the lines. I think this second attempt is more realistic. Doesn't look so much like an Elvis painting on velvet :D

Thanks Lisa for another lovely tut. I tried three different images before I got something I was happy with. It was worth it though, I love this result and have posted it in my gallery. (I changed the colour dodge layer to 50% opacity and also did a levels adjustment on the finished sketch.)

It is hard to pick the "correct" pic for this tut. This is the fourth pic I did. I really didn't like the first three at all.

This sketch effect was one of the first things I tried to do when I got elements. Kind of got hooked after that! This looks more like a painting but will try a better sketch later.

additional steps:
15. duplicated luminosity layer.
16. temporary eye hidden the top luminosity layer
17. reduced brightness and contrast of the beneath luminosity layer
18. changed finally the blending mode of the top layer to multiply

Thanks Lisa for the fun challenge - I like sketches!! I turned mine into a
scrapbook page. I multiplied the sketch a bunch of times to darken it a bit, then merged them together. The background was distracting so I erased out some of it w/ a low opacity brush. I want to try this one again!

Mine came out flat when I lowered opacity, so I turned to that trusty find edges filter to add some additional definition.

One more as I had to see what it would do with animals :) And I tried that find edges too - thanks for the tip!

Pity about the trees and I didn't have the patience to get rid of them, but the poodle pattern is interesting :)

I think my 'trying out' count is up to ten now:). Such an easy technique, but it doesn't work on too many images. I thought it was good on this one. Once again I lowered opacity on the colour dodge blend, and also used find edges filter as suggested. Lowered that to about 30%.

Here's my first try. I always think that this technique looks best with boat scenes - I think it's all the straight lines of the masts, but I've done that before so have tried it out on an action shot of my son on his blades:

Hi everyone,

This is my 1st post in this category and my 1st attempt at the sketch effect. I followed the tutorial but did a few tweaks: lowered the Luminosity just a bit, and used Levels. I cheated a bit by using the Burn tool in a few areas.

I was previewing my post, when we lost power (a heavy storm has just rolled in). I wonder if this a sign I'm not ready for this yet.
