Mask Mode

Is there a way to invoke the mask mode(generating the red overlay that defines what is/is not a selection)other than selecting the "selection brush" and then clicking on "mode" "mask"?

You can borrow a mask from an adjustment layer (doesn't use the red overlay, though), or you can download and install Grant's Tools...
