View Full Version : PSE5 keeps crashing

I started using PSE5 several months back and really like it. About a week ago I started having problems while processing photographs. There are several different symptoms, but the end result is always the same, PSE5 crashes.

Sometimes, while I am scrolling through the RAW files to open them, PSE5 will stop showing previews and will lock up and crash.

Sometimes when a file is open, and I try to do something like convert to black and white, the program will encounter an error, lock up and crash.

Sometimes, the program simply crashes with no notice. It just disappears and I am left at my desktop.

Lately I cannot process more than 5 or 10 photographs without it crashing, and I used to be able to work for hours with no problem. I have free hard drive space, so I don't think that is the problem.

In desperation, I removed the program, reloaded it, and then updated my RAW file (which I have to do to get support for my Canon XTi), but the problem still exists. Has anyone else encountered this? Is there a solution. I am so frustrated.

What operating system are you using? How much memory does your computer have?

Am I understand you properly ... sometimes the program crashes in Organizer and sometimes it crashes in Editor?

Other than PSE, is your computer running properly, without crashes and with its normal speed?

I am running XP. The system has 1.5Gb of RAM. I am always in editor as that is the only part of the program I use. However, when I click file-open and am scanning through a set of RAW files, sometimes the thumbnail previews just stop appearing and the program becomes unresponsive. Othertimes, I have managed to get a RAW file open and am in the middle of editing it when the program crashes.

Quite often the program will not start up again unless I wait a while. Then it will run fine for a while and crash again. It feels like a resource problem, but I never had any problems before and I have not changed anything. I used this setup for months without problems until Memorial Day weekend.

Other than that, I am not noticing any other problems on this computer. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Chris,

Have you seen this AdobeTech Note on troubleshooting for Photoshop Elements 5 (Windows)?

No, I had not seen that, and it looks extremely useful. Thanks for the link. I will work through their recommendations tonight.

I had similar problems with PSE 6 and tried many different things from the Adobe site, none of which corrected the crashes which occurred in editor and the organizer when working with RAW files. I eventually uninstalled a recently installed program which was Nikon Capture NX. This resolved the crashes. I suggest trying to uninstall recently installed programs one at a time to see if this helps. I have a similar computer set up with XP and 3 G of ram. Good luck.

I have been having a devil of a time getting PSE6 to work too...recently after having my hard drive deleted and programs re installed (for error messages/closing in editor) I now contend with it shutting down completely to where I am at my desk top like one description above. I am always in Editor and it happens when I have a lot going on...i.e. creating a scrapboook page-not dealing with just images, I was told by a few "pros' that I need more RAM. Am doing that next and will report if this helps. I will be watching to see if anyone else solves their problems...please post what worked- thanks in advance & good luck :)
