View Full Version : Restore a version set?

Today I upgraded from PSE3.0 to PSE6.0, but the upgrade somehow lost my catalog. I imported all my photos to 6.0 just fine using File > Get Photos and Videos > From Files and Folders - but all my version sets are lost.

So, I have a lot of files like P5010011.JPG and P5010011_edited-1.JPG that used to be a single version set in PSE3.0.

Can I force PSE6.0 to assemble these photos into version sets based on filename? I really don't want to manually stack thousands of photos.

Thanks!

I would try to import the PSE3 catalog into PSE6, instead of re-importing all your photos. PSE6 should convert the catalog from PSE3 format to PSE6 format. This will ensure that PSE6 keeps the version sets.

OK, so here is the full story: my PSE3.0 Catalog got corrupted, which is the reason I upgraded to PSE6.0 (adobe's website suggests upgrading if PSE3.0 begins to have problems with version sets).

So, is my only option to manually create Stacks? Why isn't there an option to manually (or automatically) create Version Sets?

I don't know what you mean by "my PSE3.0 Catalog got corrupted", but have you tried, in PSE3, doing a File->Catalog->Recover? This fixes many catalog related problems. Then, if that is successful, import the catalog into PSE6.

After years of using 3.0, suddenly 90% of my version sets stopped appearing in the Organizer. Only the most recently edited photo appeared in Organizer, with no indication that there are other copies. I found this article on Adobe's site:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=331489

Recovering the Catalog did not work. So, I followed the article's first suggestion and upgraded PSE6.0 and imported the 3.0 Catalog, but the version sets were still not appearing.

So, I did File > Get Photos and Videos > From Files and Folders to get the *_edited-1.jpg files back into Organizer, but they are treated as separate photos and not associated with the version set.

There's no easy way to recreate version sets in PSE. There is a difficult way, but if you have a lot of those former version sets, you would probably be served just as well creating stacks. (And I recall reading about a problem with stacks in PSE6, but since I don't have PSE6, I don't remember exactly what it is; you should do a search and find out what that problem is)

Given that PSE 6 wasn’t able to find the PSE 3 version sets, it sounds like your PSE 3 catalog got seriously corrupted – scary.

To quickly stack the photos that used to be in version sets, use the Edit > Stack > Automatically Suggest Photo Stacks command. It does a pretty good job of guessing the previous version sets, and you get the opportunity to review and correct before it makes the stacks.

The problem with stacks that Paige referred to actually affects both version sets and stacks in PSE 6: When you do any find or search, if the search matches a photo in a stack or version set, then the entire stack or set is included in the search results (even though the other photos in the stack or version set may not match the search).
