This critter hung around long enough for me to grab my camera and take it's picture. It's the first orange dragonfly that I've seen.

I was just admiring your orange butterfly in your gallery. What a fantastic capture that is! Very well done!

Hi Bill,

Great job! The details are so vivid. How did you do it? What camera did you use?

Julie and Sepiana, glad you like the orange dragonfly. My camera is a Nikon D-80 and the lens is the AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G. I really like this lens as it produces great closeups with flowers and bugs and all tiny things. I was lucky with this photo as I hand held it. Normally I use a tripod and remote shutter release but I was afraid the dragonfly would fly away...........

Hi, I was so excited when I saw your dragonfly. In May 2006 one came to visit me. He flew away once, then noticed I had a camera and wanted his photo. So he came back and sat on a stick until I got tired of holding the camera. Must have taken 50 pictures of him. He was so photogenic. No retouching of the photo. His name is Flame Skimmer Libellula saturata. I see from the internet that he is common in the western states. I've only seen one since and he was just passing through my daughters yard.

Here is my photo: http://www.elementsvillage.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=4986

Bill, I agree with Es: that's a Flame Skimmer dragonfly, a native of the western US. Beautiful shot!

Es, your shot is lovely too! This sounds like a particularly cooperative insect. ;)

What a beautiful shot--the veins in the wings are so crisp!
