I've done a number of searches both here and on the 'net to no avail. Some comments say I need an update for my PS E 5...but the Adobe site doesn't appear to list one. Any help appreciated and thanks... Richg99

If ARW files are raw files from a SONY camera, then you would want to download and install Adobe Camera Raw

ACR 4.4.1 supports the following Sony cameras:

Sony DSC-F828 DSC-V3 DSC-R1 A100 A200 A300 A350 A700 You can get it here:

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3894

Installation instructions are for PSE6 but it works in PSE5.

Unfortunately, the second download says it is NOT compatible with PS Elements 5.0 for Windows. I am running the PS E 5 on Vista...but...it doesn't say it is compatible with that program either. Bah humbug ( so far) Rich

It doesn't say that - it says:

The Camera Raw 4.4.1 plug-in is not compatible with versions of Adobe Photoshop® earlier than Photoshop CS3, versions of Adobe Photoshop Elements earlier than Photoshop Elements 4.01 for Macintosh or Photoshop Elements 5.0 for Windows®

Emphasis on the word earlier - it won't run on PSE4 but it does run on PSE5. Perhaps it's not the greatest wording :)

As a Sony Alpha user I can assure you that .ARW files will correctly open in Adobe RAW. Originally I has PSE 5.0. It opened my ARW's right out of the box. However I would highly recommend that you get the latest version of ACR for all the new features.

Thanks to Tony Bud and everybody. I read that wording three times and still got "not compatible with" out of it. I see, now, that I was mis-reading it. Download in progress and thanks again.! Rich

OK I downloaded the DNG converter and Adobe RAW. I see if I first convert all the files in the folder to DNG...I can then open a DNG pix in my Adobe PS Elements folder; adjust and re-save with a new designation.

?????? After I re-saved with the designation of dng...I find I cannot open that file in PS Elements??? The DNG editor doesn't give me an option of saving in any other file extension????????

What does Adobe RAW do? When do I call upon it?

Sorry for the dumb questions, but I've been muddling along for years with jpgs. This is my first venture into using RAW pix. thanks Rich

I found my answer...after opening the DNG file in
adobe's Camera RAW...I have to select OPEN (rather than SAVE) and the file is then OPENed in Adobe PS Elements. thanks for any and all help. regards, Richg99
