photoshop elements 6 layer styles question

newbie here, is it normal not to have anything in >effects>layer styles? I have been looking at some youtube tutorials and tried to do one using layer styles but I don't have any. I have a lot of photo effects and filters but no layer styles. Anyone have a clue what I am doing wrong.

You certainly should have some. In Effects, when you click the Layer Style icon (second one along that shows two layers) and then select Show All in the dropdown box you should see a bunch of layer styles that came with Elements.

under layers styles there is nothing. No drop down, nothing. I down loaded grants tools do you think I could have messed something up?
