I am having trouble with premeire v4. Most of the time it works fine, but at times the program closes in the middle of a clip. I am running windows vista. I get into the orginizer of PE6 and send a clip to Premeire v4. When I veiw the clip before creating a dvd, the program closes, sometimes (not always). I reinstalled the program, but the same thing happens.
Does anyone have an answer for me?

You are going to have to supply more details of your Premiere Element 4 project as well as your operating system.
1. You say you are running on Vista. What is the Vista version, how much is the installed RAM, available RAM, and free hard drive space? Have you defragmented your system lately? Do you adjust your Virtual Memory or do you let Windows decide for you? Is there an external hard drive formatted in NTFS in the mix? If you look in Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Discs, where are the scratch files directed? When you look at the Timeline, there is usually a red line over the Timeline (means that you need to Render by pressing the Enter key to get a decent Preview). Rendering results in the red line turning green and adds temporary files with a lot of MBs to wherever you have your Premiere Elements 4 Preview Files. Are you Rendering a lot. Keep in mind that Rendering affects the Preview and not the final quality of the product.
2. You mention using clips. Since Photoshop Elements 6 is a photo editor and Premiere Elements 4 is a video editor, I am assuming that you must be creating a slideshow with photos and videos in Photoshop Elements 6 and sending it to Premiere Elements 4. If you do have video in the Photoshop Elements slideshow, what is its format. I am also assuming that you are using the Send to Premiere Elements (non .wmv route) as the output. The pixel dimensions of the photos should not exceed 1000 x 750 pixels. The use of a lot of oversized photos can create major problems.
There is no blanket answer to your question as posed. I suspect that you are dealing with a resource issue. Review my comments and browse through the other threads in the Premiere Elements Forum here for problems/solutions.
Then. when you respond to my comments, we will have more to work with. Related links can be found in previous threads. If you cannot locate them, I will customize a list for you.

Thanks for replying to my message. I am running Vista Home Premium. I have a 500 gig hard drive plus an external hard drive. I put my videos from my camera into PE 6 and then when I ge into the organizer and find the video, I send it to Premiere and then try to run it, before burning a dvd. I let windows decide for me on the memory.
If I get into organizer of PE 6, I can open the file and it will run through alright, with no sound, but when I try it on Premiere it will run 80 percent through and then close the program. This happens a lot. It has happened every since I installed Premiere. Sometimes it works okay, but too often it closes the program.
Thank you
Phil

1. Is your external hard drive format NTFS or FAT32? It should be NTFS. Are your videos from the camera saved to this external hard drive or the C drive?
2. What camera (camcorder, point & shoot) are you using and what is the video format: DV AVI, AVI MotionJPEG, AVI MPEG4, other? How many minutes are these videos? I take it we are talking about video not still images at this point.
3. and then when I go into the organizer and find the video, I send it to Premiere and then try to run it, before burning a dvd I am not clear on your work flow. I am understanding you to say that you download your video from the camera, presumed stored to a hard drive location, with a thumbnail in the Photoshop Elements Organizer. Photoshop Elements 6 and Premiere Elements 4 have an Organizer. With Photoshop Elements 6 and Premiere Elements 4 on the same computer, they share a common database. So, the video thumbnails that you see in Photoshop Elements 6 Organizer will also be in the Premiere Elements 4 Organizer. So, why not just open your video in Premiere Elements 4? That brings up the next question, if you are doing what I understand you to be doing, just how are you sending your video from Photoshop Elements 6 Organizer to the Premiere Elements Media Bin/Timeline? File Menu/Send to Premiere Elements??? I need more details on this aspect too.
Another point that did not sound right was your comment about playing the video in the Photoshop Elements 6 Organizer. You say it plays, but with no sound. If you double click the video thumbnail in the Photoshop Elements 6 (or for that matter the Premiere Elements 4) Organizer, you get a preview window for playback WITH sound. So that aspect needs attention. Are your audio drivers undated?
Check out my comments and please correct if I have misunderstood what you are doing and observing.
To be continued...

Dear ATR
My external hard drive is a fat32, ( I believe) I shot the pictures with a JVC one touch movie camera. The output is MOD which is then converted to MVI It is a fairly new camera and I am not familiar with all the stuff yet. There is no tape so it is backed up to my C: drive and operated on from there. The length of the movie is about 3 minutes. I have used this successfully on other short movies, so it isn't a constant thing. There must be something that I am doing wrong. I rendered the movie successfully before trying to play it.
As I understand it the Premiere 4 will not accept media directly from the camera but it must be from the hard drive as a file. I will delete what I have and try it again to see if I am doing it correctly.

Those last details should have gone to the top of the list. Premiere Elements 4 often has problems with MOD files. Converting your MOD to DV AVI before bringing them into Premiere Elements is the workaround. MPEG Streamclip should work for MOD file conversion to DV AVI, but, without further research, I am not sure if MVI would work. Where and when are you making the MOD to MVI conversion? Are you doing that or is the camera? If you are, what program are you using for the conversion and why?
Check out the party line on file formats supported by Premiere Elements 4. I read somewhere that those MVI are supposed to use up a lot of memory??? Their mention is rare in my searches, and I see no mention of them in the video file support list for Premiere Elements 4.

Although MOD is on that list (for import only), problems exist and the MPEG Streamclip workaround is THE way to go for MOD.

Those were some from many.
Right now, I suspect that you will get consistent non crashes by converting MOD to DV AVI with MPEG Streamclip. Just read the details carefully.
That external hard drive should be converted from FAT32 to NTFS. Or, if possible, removed from the system until this issue is resolved.
I will not go into the topic of Premiere Elements 4 Capture now, but do some reading on that. If you give more details of your camera, I will try to research it for you, if necessary.
Let me know if any of this helps turn things around for you.

That helps a lot. I discovered something that should make it clear what is wrong. If I can put it here, I will.

When I was browsing the Adobe Premiere Elements User to User Forum this morning, I came across this topic posted yesterday that I thought you might find interesting:
