Is there a way to simply copy and paste selected photos to another folder in the organizer? This is an organizing program right?

That isn't how Organiser works.

It catalogs and manages one single copy of your image files, plus edited versions of them if appropriate.

Why do you want to create multiple (identical) copies?

i want to be able to batch process a selected number of images and it can not be done that i know of in the organizer program. you can only process and batch from the editor. from the editor you don't have the ability to select and chose certain images. as far as i know you can only batch the whole folder. so i have a folder of 200 raw images, i want to rename, modify and convert 50 of them to jpegs to be emailed, printed, or burned to a cd. i do not want to modify, convert, email, or burn all 200. so copying a selected number of images to another folder would be nice. if pse didn't crash as often as it does i'd have more faith in the program to trust it with the one and only copy of the image i'd like to modify. for example irfranview, a free download BTW, does just this. i would like to use only one program for all my image needs. that i assume is the point of the pse organizer/editor. only problem it falls short with simple operations and not to mention crashes left and right.

I think I may have figured out what i need to do. Select images in Editor, click on file...export...as new image...and then select the parameters and then finally click on export.

I use file>export from Organizer frequently.

I have categories for "to print" or "to burn" with tags with the date and/or the name of the person I am printing or burning for. Just select the tag and export to a temp folder to be later burned or uploaded to a print site. I often use the renaming option available in export, especially when I want to maintain a collection order via filename order.

It is also quite simple to move files in Organizer with file>move to get them all in one folder. And then there is always file>copy.

I have an old version of PSE, but it seems to me that at least some of the batch processes will work on all open images rather than choosing a specific folder, so you could choose in Organizer, open in editor, then process.

I suggest you check out the book and website at www.photofanatic.com for good Organizer tips.

If you've got crashing issues, you need to address why that is happening. The only systematic crashing problem that I've seen reported is the multi-processor issue with PSE6 that I believe you were pointed at in one of the other threads you started. Historically, PSE has been quite stable and reliable, and there is little reason to doubt that it will look after your photos perfectly well.

You can rename, and convert RAWs to JPGs from within Organiser using File>Export which can act on a selection or Collection/Album without having to make new copies. You can't modify them using this function, except for resizing, so your route depends on what you actually want to do to the images, which you haven't specified.

Organiser is not really folder based - and if you want to make best use of it, you need to take a little time to understand how it works.

I entirely endorse Karin's suggestion re the book and website, which are written by one of the original creators of the program.

The export function is exactly what i was looking for. The term export wasn't what i was looking for. i associate "export" to be moved outside the active program. so i never thought to try it. but anyway it works and will help me get back to using only one program for my photos. thanks for the link. i have been hesitant to subsribe to any pay sites for tips etc. as far as being folder based, i am a freak about organization. it helps with backups. rather back up my whole photo album i back up only what has not been backed up. i have the same issues with my music. rather back up 500gigs i only back up the new stuff. now unless PSE has a backup function that only backups new items only that i have not found yet i may be willing to not be so folder organized based. as far as PSE stability I am not sure what is going on but PSE will on occasion just shut down. sometimes leaving the thumbnail i was working on as a broken link. the image is still on the drive but not found with PSE. this has happened about 5 times out of the 10 times i have used PSE. i have started to look into what is going on at the time and have not figured it out yet. initially i thought i had used up all my RAM but investigating further that isn't the cause. i usually run only my web browser and PSE at the same time. otherwise all programs are usually closed. I am not showing any drive errors. when i have time i will look into it further.

PSE Backup will backup incrementally, and using the built-in backup routine has the advantage of backing up your catalogue at the same time, thus keeping it in step with your image file backups.

You can do this independently, but if you are running PSE6 there is a pitfall when restoring independently taken PSE backups to new hard drives because PSE6 uses the hard drive serial number not the drive letter to record file locations.

But I'd still counsel you that PSE Organiser is not primarily a folder-based program. If you run an extensive folder-based organisational structure alongside Organiser's tags and collections/albums you are almost certainly making work for yourself.

Folder based organization is not incompatable with Organizer. Just keep it simple.

I have in my Photos folder a several broad category folders (Family, Work, Organization) within which are Year & Month folders. The month folders may contain an event or photographer folder or just the images. I also have a Photo Projects folder with various category folders in it.

With this set up my images are placed immediately as they are loaded or created and I seldom if ever need to move them. They all reside on an ehd and if I access them on a different computer have the folder Organization to use to find the image I want.

The date based folders help when the date on an image becomes corrupt or was taken by a camera without the correct date setting. Putting images in event or photographer folders makes it easy to apply and event or photographer tag even if there is a long span between loading the photos and tagging them.

When I first started using Organizer I used folder view a lot. Now I don't use it often at all, having learned to use categories and tags.
