Hi,

I am using PSE 6 and trying to organize my hard drive. I would like to have one subfolder under My Pictures for each year. Then under each year, subfolders for each shooting date.

Before I decided to organize like that I imported files by shoot date under My Pictures. I would like to move those folders under the correct year. When I use the PSE Move command in PSE6, it appears to move the individual files under the year, not the whole folder (with the folder name).

Am I missing something? (See example below).

Thanks,
Brian

Example:
Currently the file structure is:

My Pictures
2004
2004-12-30
2004-11-30
2004-10-30
Would like it to look like (by moving the 2004-10-30 folder):

My Pictures
2004
2004-12-30
2004-11-30
2004-10-30

I would strongly recommend that you use the Organizer to organize your photos. There are many powerful tools in Organizer, and put together they are much more powerful than anything you can do with Windows folders. For example, your organizing by year and month can be done in Timeline view in Organizer — and if your files come from a camera that writes dates and times to the photos, and not a scanner, then this organizing is already done for you. You can also tag your photos giving you another powerful organization tool that is more powerful than anything you can do with Windows.

You would use Organizer, not Windows, to find your photos, and once you start doing things that way, it simply doesn't matter what folders things are in. So I honestly don't see a benefit to moving files around on your hard drive in this case. To me, all this effort to organizing in Windows folders duplicates what can be done more easily (and may be already done for you) and more powerfully in Organizer. So again, I strongly recommend that you do this organizing in Organizer.

I suppose you have your folder structure visible in the left part of your screen. If not, click in the display icon (top right) and select 'folder location', shortcut Ctrl Alt F3.
Then simply click the subfolder to move, and drag it where you want. It may take some time, but it is safe to do so.

Since you will be moving files using PSE 6, I suggest that you read the following thread and then follow the link in that thread for more information about a problem that you want to avoid
