In the Newsletter (vol 2, no 7) on the page7, there is picture with a greyscale card. I wonder where to get this pretty cool card. I would like to get one :)

I would imagine a large photography store would have them. If not you should be able to get one online.

Ray..anything good in Montreal?

You get these at your nearest camera store.

There are two flavours of this kind of card. I use a Kodak gray card kit. It consists of two solid sheets (cardboard) One side is gray, the other is white, and one is very small (4x6) and the other is large (8.5x11).

What I do is, depending on my camera...

Canon Powershot A510: Set it to white balance, on manual balancing, and I shot this card (gray side) while the middle target point completely covers the gray area, and I make sure the gray area if fully lit.

Canon EOS 10D: I shot this card making sure it fills the entire image area, completely lit, gray side, and then, I set the camera in Manual White Balancing mode, recall the image, and set the balance this way.

This type is used before shooting. I've had very, very good result with the Kodak kit.

The one shown in the Volume 2, Number 7 is for post processing. You'll use this with Levels command, usually.

On Google, I saw the GretagMacbeth one but it is not as interesting asthat the one used in Newsletter. Plus, it is pretty expensive. Not sure that it is worth the price.

Michoumisalade... I didn't notice you live in Montreal... Get to LL Lozeau (St-Hubert, near Rosemont), you'll find these kits :)

Gary : We had an Halloween party on Monday and I think we'll enjoy one last Fall walk on Saturday before big cold settle in, in a few weeks.

It would be hard...you would have to print it sometime..lots of variables there.

I wonder if our copier test targets are cheaper than the photo ones.

I think I have one with 10% gradations

Unless one has a perfectly calibrated printer, or perhaps a function inside the printer, I would not have confidence in a home made gray card. Besides, a gray card isn't that expensive, unless it's coated and made to stand the passage of time for the next 125 years.. :)

Until I saw the darn newsletter I had never thought of putting a gray card in the corner of the field of view during a portrait shoot to facilitate color balance. Can you say DUH?

Gonna buy one this weekend. I won't be buying one to last 125 years. 50 should do it.

I just went to purchase my grey card at LL Lozeau. There are so many things to watch that I spent 2 hours before purchase it!!! Oh lala! if only I was a millionnaire! I was not only gone out with the grey card but a super lense, plus many lense's filters, plus a photo printer, plus many scrapbook albums, plus...plus...plus.... I have a lot of fun to go there! Simply, only enough money missed :P
Thanks Ray for that great idea! Only one question: in the bag, I got 2 grey cards. I though that it was one grey card + one white card? or it is what I got: 2 grey cards?

I just checked.. I got 3 cards. 2 large and 1 small, both with one white side and one gray side. The smaller is in its own sleeve.

Well... I go to LL Lozeau so often, we might one day meet there :-D Seriously, I was there last weekend, I was looking at their Epson Picture Mate.. ahhhhhhhhh ! :-)

There are so many toys there.. It's incredible!
