In the Workflow course lesson 8, an extensive camera raw edit screen is shown in Photoshop Elements 3. When I open the downloaded image -- .NEF extension -- the editor opens it in a very simple edit screen with only a few adjustments showing. I have downloaded the latest camera RAW update and installed it per instructions.

Mine is the same as the course..but it is not the newest.

You moved the previous RAW plugin to another spot?
I'm kind of guessing ..can ya tell. I don't use Raw that much and I have a Canon.

Hi Mike,
The box is small and has only a selection window for white balance choices and two rotate arrows.

Ray,
Did you uninstall the previous Raw plug-in before installing the new one..?
If so I suggest two things... delete the preferences file, if this doesn't work then delete and re-install the Raw plug-in.
Let me know how you get on.

Hi Mike,
I installed the Raw plug in per instructions, but no improvement. I think I should uninstall Elements and start over? Thanks for the suggestions.

I would try deleting the preferences first as per Mikes suggestion.
ctrl/alt/shift at the same time as program launch..you should then get a popup asking to delete preferences say yes. Sometimes it takes a bit to rebuild

When you reinstalled the Raw Plug In ... did you download it again?
... and did you download Camera Raw 3.2 ...

Hi Wendy, Gary, and Mike,
I uninstalled and reinstalled Elements 3, then installed the updates, then I deleted "preferences" as suggested, but still the RAW edit window doesn't match the one in lesson 8......
Thanks for all of the attention....maybe it's an operator problem?

Ray,
Is your screen resolution set at 1024 x 768 ? Just a thought..

My screen resolution is 1280 x 1024. I'm thinking that I have a registry problem? As a work around, I can use Nikon's raw editor instead of Elements. It has all or most of the other controls. That may be my only solution at this time.

There was something about Nikon, but I didn't pay much attention as I have a Canon. An issue when installing their RAW plugin, it overwrote something in the Photoshop Elements folder.
Perhaps you could run a search on Forums for that..

Wendy,
Thanks for the thread. I don't think it applies since I didn't install Nikon's Picture Perfect.
But.....I tried running the NEF picture through the DNG converter and it worked. The correct NEF editor window appeared in Elements when I opened the converted file. I wasn't aware that I had to do the conversion first.
I'm thinking that, at least at this time, using the RAW feature is too much trouble for the benefit derived.

Which camera model are you using ?

Nikon Coolpix 8700 -- it is listed in the camera raw plug-in list. I also used the pic downloaded from the online training lesson 8. But, I got the same result from both -- had to go through the converter first. I don't understand that, but maybe that's normal operating procedure?

Doesn't NEF only apply to Nikon, maybe there is other software interface for Canon format.

Do you think it would make sense to download the tryout version of Elements 4 and try that? Or, would that just introduce another variable into the mix? I think Elements 3 should work if it is configured correctly.

I think NEF is Nikon format, but the picture used in online lesson 8 of Workflow course used a Nikon D70 and it worked fine for the instructor -- apparently.

Ray ...
Elements 3 and 4 use the same plug in ... so it that won't change anything.
Now we need someone who has a Coolpix camera ... Grant is a Nikon man (D70) he may be able to suggest something ..

Wendy,
Thanks again. It's nice to know I'm not alone out here in Arizona.

Viola!! I uninstalled Nikon View 6 with its embedded editor, etc., and the problem cleared. I can now open the NEF files in Elements 3 and get the correct RAW editor screen.
I guess that will work OK if I can load my pics from the camera into Elements directly and not need the Nikon interface.

Yes, it seems like a simple solution once found. I appreciate everyone's help through this experience. This is my first time using the Forum....it is a very powerful resource for Photoshop users.

DOH!!! This came up before - on that occasion it was caused by Nikon Capture...
I guess the compatibility problem affects other Nikon software.

Nikon Capture is part of the Nikon view 6 that I uninstalled. So that element is probably the culprit. Thanks!

I'm not going to be of any help here but the more information the experts have the better.
My PSE3 came bundled with Spyder 2. I have not upgraded or added any Raw editor software and there are no addons for PSE3.
I use a Nikon Coolpix 8800. In fact, the pictures were taken with an old version of the software. 1.3 I think and I think the current is 1.7.
I'm using a PC with Windows 2000.
Even though .NEF is associated with PSE3 double clicking on the picture to open it doesn't work the same as opening it from within PSE3. This may be (and probably is) user error.
Opening the image from within PSE3 gave me the same screen as shown in the tutorial.

Here's Adobe's knowledge base article:
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/326616.html
And here's my 2 cents:
I believe that the Nikon plug-in is installed by Capture AND View AND Picture Project, in other words, any Nikon app that can read NEFs.
Adobe suggests two methods for fixing this problem.
If you go the rename route, definitely change the extension of the plug-in. I lazily changed just the first part of the name and not the extension. While I was able to launch ACR with File Open, the Organizer was unable to view the NEFs. I just ended up deleting the Nikon plug-in and all was fine in the Adobe world.
BTW, I'm using PSE 3.0 which came with my Spyder 2 and I'm also a D70s user. In my workflow, my default RAW converter is Rawshooter Pro. On occasion (5% of the time) I'll use NC or ACR if I'm not happy with the image I'm getting from RSP.
